At age 76, George Griffin, a local jazz pioneer, knows drumming.

These days, Griffin lives in a Rainier Valley housing complex for seniors of limited income. The slow movements there are a long way from the jazz clubs of his younger days.

But he’s finding a different kind of reward with his fellow oldsters. He’s become the music teacher to people who, in some cases, had never before touched a musical instrument.

“I can’t hang out in the clubs like I used to,” says Griffin. “My reward now is in seeing people play the rhythm.”

Griffin was 5 when he first started banging away at cardboard boxes.

He was 16, still a junior at Garfield High School, when he was playing professionally with the Dave Lewis Combo, a legendary Northwest group.

John Coltrane. Charles Lloyd. Miles Davis.

Griffin remembers them.

In the 1960s, he was in the house band at the celebrated Penthouse club in downtown Seattle and opened for those greats.

At this particular complex, the 208-unit Courtland Place at Rainier Court, there are no assisted-living services. It is part of the Senior Housing Assistance Group for “independent seniors.”

Pianist George Colligan has visited Seattle a number of times. For many years he was based out of New York City and performed at the Earshot Jazz Festival and Jazz Alley as a member of Jack DeJohnette’s group, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and others.

Last Fall he accepted a position teaching jazz piano at Portland State University which has made his travels to Seattle more frequent … including this weekend.

Tonight (Saturday, August 18) he’ll be playing organ with Human Spirit at Egan’s Ballard Jam House (one set only starting at 7:00pm).

Tomorrow (Sunday, August 19), Colligan will switch over to piano and lead at trio at The Copper Gate featuring Jon Hamar on bass and Matt Jorgensen on drums. The show begins at 8:30pm. Seating is limited so arriving early is recommended.

Colligan’s residency in Seattle ends on Monday (August 20) when he’ll be performing with saxophonist Eric Alexander at Tula’s Jazz Club.

It is one of those rare occurrences when schedules align and an incredible night of music is the result.

Such is the case on Monday, August 13 when Tula’s Jazz Club hosts The Five Trumpets featuring Jim Rotondi, Ray Vega, Thomas Marriott, Jay Thomas and Jim Sisko. Backing up the group with be John Hansen (piano), Jon Hamar (bass) and Matt Jorgensen (drums).

The Five Trumpets has been an annual tradition led by Jim Sisko, but this year there is some added east coast talent as Jim Rotondi is passing through town on a west coast swing and Ray Vega will be in Seattle recording a new record.

The event is always a highlight of the year and brings out a lot of die-hard trumpet fanatics, so reservations are recommended.

The anticipated highlights at Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend on Saturday — the afternoon big-band segment at Fort Worden’s McCurdy Pavilion featuring songwriter and arranger Johnny Mandel conducting his own tunes and the “round midnight” set at the Upstage by pianist George Cables — handily lived up to expectations. Even better, there were some pleasant surprises, including the premiere of a new piece by artistic director John Clayton.

The crowd greeted 86-year-old Mandel with a standing ovation as he walked gingerly to the podium with the aid of a cane, having broken his hip last year. Mandel showed no signs of frailty in his patter, however, cracking wise in a residual New York accent.

“That tune was one I wrote for [Count] Basie called ‘Low Life,’ ” he said after the barn-burning opener. “It’s autobiographical.
