In 1957, Duke Ellington completed and presented “Such Sweet Thunder” in concert for the first time. Working with Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington composed a suite of musical portraits of characters from Shakespeare’s plays; Hamlet, Lady MacBeth, Caesar, Cleopatra, Henry V, Iago and others. In two unique performances last month, The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra was joined by actors from the Seattle Shakespeare Company to perform the Ellington suite with related excerpts from Shakespeare’s plays.
The complete concert will be broadcast in two parts on Jazz Northwest on 88.5 KPLU. Part 1 will air on Sunday, March 9 at 2 PM Pacific, and Part 2 will air one week later on Sunday, March16 at 2 PM Pacific.
Actors from The Seattle Shakespeare Company include Hana Lass, Darragh Kennan and George Mount, The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra is co-directed by Clarence Acox and Michael Brockman. The concert performance was recorded at Kirkland Performance Center on February 16.

This April, the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) will present a pair of concerts titled “The Art of the Jitterbug,” celebrating the irresistible dance music of the 1930s. The concert is proving to be very popular. In addition to the two performances scheduled for early April, the SRJO will be taking the concert to Edmonds Center for the Arts in late April for a third performance.
Two award-winning pairs of dancers will perform on stage alongside SRJO to showcase the jitterbug plus other exciting dance styles of early jazz such as the Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing and the Balboa. The SRJO will play some of the most lively swing music drawn from the early years of big band jazz, when the musical style swept the nation’s popular music scene during years that combined the emergence of broad social liberation, the Harlem Renaissance, and recovery from the Great Depression.
Big band jazz grew up in the nightclubs and dance halls of New York and Chicago as high-energy dance music. The zenith of jazz dancing was the jitterbug, igniting the wild enthusiasm of dance-crazed youth in the 1930s. Seattle is recognized as having one of the most active and extensive cultures in the nation for swing dancing, with ballrooms and dance halls hosting swing events year-round throughout the city.
This concert features the most popular hits from the world’s greatest dance bands—Chick Webb, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmie Lunceford, Fletcher Henderson, and Benny Goodman. Selections include Basie’s Swingin’ the Blues, Goodman’s Swing Time in the Rockies and Henderson’s Big John’s Special.
SRJO’s presentation of The Art of the Jitterbug performs Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 7:30 PM at the Nordstrom Recital Hall, Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 2 PM at the Kirkland Performance Center and Sunday, April 27 at 4 PM at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Singer Cecile McLorin Salvant dazzled Jazz Alley Wednesday, then hit the Portland Jazz Festival this past weekend. Portland, on the other hand, got first dibs on veteran Seattle trombonist Julian Priester — in bassist Buster Williams’ band Something More, which hits Jazz Alley Tuesday.
But never mind the timing, Portland got the best deal: Salvant and Williams shared a double bill at the Newmark Theatre there Saturday.
If you missed Salvant this time, make sure you don’t make that mistake again. At 24, she is easily the most thrilling and formidable new singer in jazz. Imagine the elastic time feel and smoky atmospherics of Betty Carter; the huge hoot of Sarah Vaughan’s basement range; the literate storytelling of Karrin Allyson; and an archivist’s curiosity about cool, unknown songs — and that’s just a catalog. Salvant adds up to far more than the sum of her individual parts.

Williams followed with an all-star band featuring three members of Herbie Hancock’s fondly remembered band that made the album “Mwandishi”: Williams, Priester and celebrated reed man Bennie Maupin.
This was some beefy, soulful, resonant jazz, with rhythmic elbow room and a dark fire crackling underneath, thanks to the rock solid hookup of Williams with drummer Cindy Blackman Santana and pianist George Colligan.
Colligan rattled the rafters on a metrically rejiggered version of Thelonious Monk’s “Epistrophy,” and the 78-year-old Priester, though his best playing days are probably behind him, offered a solo of grace and dignity on the closing ballad, “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was.”
The group plays Jazz Alley Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25-26.
One act in Portland that won’t make a Seattle date was a rare pairing of hipster pianist-singer-songwriters Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg, most famous for their composing collaboration on the classic sendup “I’m Hip.”

When Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the 15 finalists for the annual Essentially Ellington competition Wednesday, jazz buffs were pleased but not surprised to see two familiar names — Roosevelt and Garfield high schools, both from Seattle.
But for the first time in competition history, Mount Si High School, in Snoqualmie, also made the finals.
“We’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great musicians and educators in the area this year,” said the modest albeit thrilled Mt. Si jazz band director Matt Wenman. “It’s been a community effort.”

The Panama Hotel is more than a century old and it still operates today in what was known as Japan Town, between China Town and the historic Jackson Street district in Seattle. Jamie Ford’s novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet captures the World War II era when the hotel became a focal point for the Japanese community, when Japanese Americans were being forceably removed from coastal areas and sent to inland internment camps. The hotel and the novel are also at the cultural intersection of the International District and the lively Jackson Street “After Hours” period of jazz and entertainment clubs.
Steve Griggs composed Panama Hotel Jazz – a suite of music reflecting the era of the novel, the hopes and fears, the wartime hysteria, and racism that caused Americans of Japanese descent to be seen as potential threats and taken from the place where many were born and grew up. The suite was first presented last Fall in a series of concerts at The Panama Hotel, funded by a 4Culture Site Specific Grant.
Panama Hotel Jazz was presented again this month as part of the Art of Jazz series at The Seattle Art Museum, coordinated by Earshot Jazz. Excerpts from this concert will be heard on Jazz Northwest, Sunday February 23 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU. The music is performed by Steve Griggs, tenor saxophone and narrator, Jay Thomas, trumpet and flugelhorn, Susan Pascal, vibraharp, Milo Petersen, guitar and Phil Sparks, bass.

Thank you all! It has been a great run at Tula’s. March 2nd will be our 15th year anniversary and final performance. Come out and reminisce with us about all the great musicians who graced the stage over the years. There have been well over 100 musicians who sat in dating back to 1998.
The original band included Phil Sparks, Larry Jones and Eric Vaughn with Hadley Caliman. The gig was created to feature the great talent of Hadley Caliman who at the time was teaching at Cornish and playing mostly casuals. Paul Toliver and I wanted to showcase his great talent on a more regular basis so more could hear his wonderful gift that those around the globe already were aware of.
Over the years there were many who began their musical careers and sharpened their skills during the 1st Sunday Jazz Offering. I feel very honored to have been a part of their positive experiences.
Thank you to Paul Toliver for your commitment and money (lol) during the early years when we struggled to keep it going. Thank you, to Mack for allowing us to express our form of “keepin it real” jazz at his 1st class venue. Thanks to all the musicians who made it a special event . A very special thanks to those in the audience that came month after month after month. I will only mention one couple – the Victors – Randle and Dee who came to see us on the very 1st performance and came every 1st Sunday thereafter until Mr Victor passed away. But there were others who joined soon after we began and they come every month to hear us even to this day. Thanks to you all. I really have felt your appreciation, support and love over the years.
I also want to thank my daughter, Victoria who worked alongside me for years greeting everyone at the door until she relinquished that assignment to my wonderful and beautiful wife and best friend, Angela.

Phil Sparks is one of the Seattle area’s most popular jazz bass players, and every Friday afternoon he leads a hand-picked jazz trio for an informal session at The Latona Pub during Happy Hour from 5 to 7. Most of Seattle’s top players have played here with Phil Sparks, and the personnel changes from week to week. It’s crowded, it’s noisy, but it IS happy and the nearest listeners are drawn in to the energetic but acoustic music. Generally, it’s SRO Fridays at the popular pub at 65th and Latona near Green Lake in Seattle.
The trio sets up in the front window, little more than an arm’s reach from the bar. The musicians come from Phil Sparks’ many musical associations. Sometimes there are out-of-town guests like the recent visit from saxophonist Rob Scheps, formerly of Portland now in New York, who was just returning from Hawaii after a cross-country series of performances with local musicians at each stop. The drummer is D’Vonne Lewis who is carrying on the Seattle musical legacy of his grandfather Dave Lewis.
