Drummer Matt Jorgensen will lead a group on Saturday, September 27, celebrating the music of John Coltrane (Coltrane’s birthday is Tuesday, September 23rd).

The group will feature saxophonist Mark Taylor, Portland pianist Darrell Grant, bassist Evan Flory-Barnes and Jorgensen on drums. Special guests will join on select tunes.

It’s the last weekend of Summer and we’ll feature some songs for the end of Summer with Jessica Williams and Ralph Towner and Denney Goodhew on Jazz Northwest. We’ll also look ahead and sample some of the great live jazz coming up this Fall including the CD release party for Ann Reynolds’ Clave Gringa on Monday night at Tula’s. Former Seattle pianist Larry Fuller has a new CD and he’ll be back in Seattle next month for three performances.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke for 88.5 KPLU and is heard Sundays at 2 pm Pacific. It streams live at kplu.org and is also available as a podcast after the broadcast. Next week: an all-star vocal concert from Jazz Port Townsend featuring Sachal Vasandani, Johnaye Kendrick and Dena DeRose from McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.

Diane Schuur and Janis Mann, two former Seattle singers will come home for gigs in Seattle this week and their most recent CDs are featured on this week’s Jazz Northwest, Sunday September 7 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and kplu.org. Both launched successful recording and touring careers from Seattle and their most recent CDs are featured on this program. Janis Mann will sing in the Art of Jazz series at Seattle Art Museum on Thursday September 11, and Diane Schuur will be at Jazz Alley September 11-14. Don’t be surprised if you see either of them at the other’s gig, they’re longtime friends as well.

Also on this week’s Jazz Northwest is another former Seattle singer with a new CD, Dee Daniels, plus Collier & Dean, Ann Reynolds, Greg Williamson, and new music from Portland and Vancouver BC.
