Nickel and Brass is a series of new musical works composed by Andrew Boscardin to be premiered on June 20 at 8pm at the Chapel Performance Space, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N, Seattle. The pieces – combining elements of jazz, rock, new music and improvisation – feature a unique ensemble with an emphasis on the low brass and the electric guitar and their combined range of sonic possibilities. Along with Boscardin on guitar, the band features Chris Stover on trombone, Ben Thomas on vibes, Clark Gibson on saxophones, Tom Varner on French horn, Jon Hamar on bass, and Brad Gibson on drums.

The Monktail Creative Music Concern is proud to lead a growing coalition of community sponsors and volunteers to bring you Sounds Outside 2008. The City of Seattle recently renovated Cal Anderson Park and we want to ensure the park is a place of positive use, where we continue to build Seattle’s community. This year’s festival will take place on July 19 and August 23. Seattle leads the nation in creative and jazz music development. Seattle Times: Esperanza Spalding is turning the jazz world on its ear

Spalding is clearly breaking barriers, not just for her own career, but for jazz. A perceptive young woman, she understands all too well the retro niche the music has dug for itself. She said in our January interview, “Jazz has been evolving, it’s just that most cats are looking in the wrong places for it.”

One obvious place you can look for Spalding right now is at Jazz Alley Tuesday and Wednesday. Spalding appears with the rhythm section on her album — Leo Genovese (piano) and Otis Brown (drums) — plus Richard Vogt (guitar). Don’t miss this opportunity. She may not be playing clubs long.

Spalding is not the only singer worth hearing in town. Karrin Allyson, whose excellent new album, “Imagina,” also takes her to Brazil, plays the Alley Thursday through Sunday. Pianist Lynne Arriale’s Trio is featured in performance on Jazz Northwest on 88.5 KPLU on Sunday June 15 at 1 PM PDT. The Trio was recorded at The Upstage during last July’s Jazz Port Townsend. The Lynne Arriale Trio has recorded ten CDs, the most recent of which (“Live”) won numerous awards and was among Top Ten lists for the year.

Also on this week’s Jazz Northwest is news of current live jazz around Seattle and upcoming festivals in Vancouver and Victoria in June and Port Townsend in July.

Jazz Northwest is produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU 88.5 and is streamed live to the internet and available as a podcast after the airdate.

Doug Miller CD Review

Doug Miller‘s new CD, Regeneration, was just reviewed on All About Jazz.com.

Miller’s bass playing is featured prominently throughout with arco and pizzicato soloing. It is his unaccompanied bass reading of “Bye Bye Blackbird,” however, that really sums up what his playing is all about: no-nonsense, punchy and swinging. The influence of heavy hitter’s like bassists Ray Brown and John Clayton is made obvious through nicely-phrased blues licks, double stops and chords.

This music is both interesting and fun. Miller and company come across as a strong, like-minded unit.

National Endowment for the Arts Announces the 2009 NEA Jazz Masters

Washington, DC – The National Endowment for the Arts today announced the recipients of the 2009 NEA Jazz Masters Award–the nation’s highest honor in this distinctly American music. The six recipients will each receive a $25,000 grant award, and will be publicly honored in an awards ceremony and concert on Friday, October 17, 2008.

The six 2009 NEA Jazz Masters are: George Benson (vocalist and solo instrumentalist, guitar), Jimmy Cobb (rhythm instrumentalist, drums), Lee Konitz (solo instrumentalist, saxophone), Toots Thielemans (solo instrumentalist, harmonica and guitar), and Snooky Young (solo instrumentalist, trumpet). Recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder will receive the 2009 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy.
