We’ve received multiple reports that Gary Bannister passed away this morning in Seattle. More details will follow.

Most people will know Gary as the talent buyer for Jazz Alley, but it should be noted that as Earshot Jazz celebrates it’s 25th anniversary, and in the midst of their 22nd Earshot Jazz Festival, Gary was one of the original founders of Earshot.

We dug up this 1995 Seattle Times story on Earshot:
“Earshot was founded in 1984 around a dining room table by three jazz enthusiasts, who contributed to the music in different ways: Paul de Barros, a writer and frequent Seattle Times contributor; Alan Youngblood, a musician; and Gary Bannister, an educator.

Their blueprint soon formed the basis for a nonprofit jazz support group, particularly for avant-garde, original artists living in the Northwest or others stretching the music’s style. A monthly newsletter appeared that the group is still best known for, but still following the writing-musician-educator groove.”

Hadley Caliman’s performance from the 2010 Ballard Jazz Festival will be broadcast on an up-coming episode of Front Row on The Seattle Channel.

Seattle’s Garfield High School, under the direction of Clarence Acox, took top honors at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 15th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, again, in May of this year. The school made competition history, becoming the first band ever to win four times. Acox has led the band for nearly four decades, and he is clearly still going strong. He is known for helping to nurture strong soloists, like tenor saxophonist Roxy Coss who is a former member of the Garfield band.

Episode 3 is the first installment of our four-week preview of the Earshot Jazz Festival. Now in its 22nd year, the Earshot Fest is one of the most diverse and well respected jazz festivals in the nation. There are over 50 concerts and events during its three-week run that touch on just about every corner of the jazz world.

The 22nd edition of the Earshot Jazz Festival once again lives up to its reputation for curatorial discernment, showcasing veteran legends, rising stars and midcareer masters, including a generous helping of local artists. The festival runs from Friday through Nov. 7 at venues in and around Seattle.

This year’s lineup is rife with gifted female artists, from adventurous Toronto trumpeter Lina Allemano (Tuesday, Chapel Performance Space) and inventive Seattle pianist/vocalist Nelda Swiggett (Thursday, Tula’s) to the fire-and-water double bill of torrid saxophonist Tia Fuller and ethereal vocalist Gretchen Parlato (Oct. 24, Triple Door).

The festival opens Friday at the Triple Door with the award-winning Garfield High School Jazz Band, featuring band alumnus and special guest, saxophonist Roxy Coss, a confident, hard-swinging player who’s already landed a precious weekly gig in Manhattan. She also celebrates the release of her self-titled debut CD with her quartet Sunday at Tula’s.
