Ellington’s wonderful “Sacred Music” is both serious and swinging. It is a reverent and hip body of jazz composition, written late in his career, for jazz big band, vocal and instrumental soloists, gospel choir, and tap dancers.

For the past 22 years Earshot Jazz has presented an annual concert of Ellington’s Sacred Music. The concert features the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, co-directed by Michael Brockman and Clarence Acox, guest vocalists Everett Greene, Nichol Eskridge, and the NW Chamber Chorus, and special guest tap-dancer Alex Dugdale.

The Eastside Jazz Extravaganza is this Sunday, December 4, at 2:00pm at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center (11100 NE 6th Street, Bellevue).

The show features a double bill headlined by vocalist Jackie Ryan joined by Randy Halberstadt, Jeff Johnson and Gary Hobbs.

The Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto will open the concert with Ben Thomas (Vibraphone and Bandoneon), Chuck Deardorf (Bass), Mark Ivester (Drums), Jeff Busch (Percussion), plus Jovino on Piano, Flute, Melodica, and percussion.

As an added bonus there will be preconcert and Intermission Jazz in the foyer with the Jose “Juicy” Gonzales Trio with Michael Marcus on Bass, Lionel Kramer on Drums, and Jose “Juicy” on Keyboards and Vocals.

The Master of ceremonies will be Jim Wilke of Jazz After Hours, PRI, Jazz Northwest, and KPLU.

Paul Motian, a drummer, bandleader, and composer of grace and abstraction, and one of the most influential jazz musicians of the last 50 years, died early Tuesday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital in NewYork. He was 80 and lived in Manhattan.

The cause was complications of myelodisplastic syndrome, a bone-marrow disorder, said his friend, Carole d’Inverno Frisell.

Mr. Motian was a living connection to some of the groups of the past that informed what jazz sounds like today: he had been in Bill Evans’s great trio in the late 1950s and early 1960s, playing on the albums “Waltz for Debby” and “Sunday at the Village Vanguard,” and in Keith Jarrett’s American quartet during the 1970s. But it was in the second half of his life that Mr. Motian found himself as a composer and a bandleader, and his own work took off.

He worked steadily, and for the last six years or so almost entirely in Manhattan, with the support of the record producers Stefan Winter and Manfred Eicher, who streamed out his albums, and Lorraine Gordon of the Village Vanguard, who eventually booked his groups for up to four or five weeks per year.

Eminent local jazz keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has gone into business with Steve Freeborn and Tia Matthies, the couple behind the old OK Hotel who now run the Rendezvous, and are opening a new club in Columbia City next month. The Royal Room is located inside the Royal Esquire Club at 5000 Rainier Avenue South — where John Roderick spent Election Night 2008 — and will include a bar, and a restaurant that will be open for dinner and weekend brunch. Horvitz says they hope to open by the week of December 16.
