Photo and interview by Steve Korn
Someone once told me that it’d be good to get a day job sometime, so I worked a temp job once in 1981 where I made $36 for 10 hours of lifting slabs of bacon with a large hook. It ended up being a great motivator.
When I was 14 I was working through some very nice beats on my silver-sparkle Decca drums. The neighbors were not amused, but somehow I ignored the pain I was causing and persevered as I got to know my new friend.
My parents were always surrounding us with music, art, books, political talk and travel without making a big deal out of any of it. A nice result is that I’m afforded an ongoing wealth of inspiration from my sister and brothers, who each possess a bundle of imagination, curiosity, and follow-through. It’s what I aspire to.
The piece of music that I’ll always have somewhere in my brain is “So What.” My dad used to play Kind of Blue on many weekend mornings starting back when I was a toddler and that same record has been following me around ever since.
If I could do it all over again, I’d pay way more attention, practice more, brush more, act better, not waste as much time, learn a foreign language, be braver…or possibly not.
Discipline is a given to do anything competently, it’s a very unfriendly word though.
Some of my best ideas come to me at the last possible moment before I need them. And yes, I could venture that procrastination enters into it.
Woody Herman Centennial
Tula’s Restaurant and Jazz Club presents a celebration of the Woody Herman Centennial on December 12th, 2013 at 7:30 PM. The famed bandleader turned 100 earlier this year, and the famed Belltown venue has put together an all-star band to perform some of the “Thundering Herd’s” greatest hits.
Woody Herman and his bands entertained audiences all over the world from the mid-1930’s until the late 1980’s. The clarinetist and saxophone player was known for keeping his big-band in step with the current times by continuously hiring contemporary arrangers and personnel in his bands to keep up with the trends of the day. His career in music was studded with number one hits, Grammy Awards and accolades from fans and critics alike.
The band assembled to perform the music of Woody Herman is comprised of the northwest’s top jazz professionals. Among those scheduled to appear are trumpeters Jay Thomas and Thomas Marriott, saxophonist (and newcomer to the Seattle scene) Pete Gallio, trombonist David Marriott and Greg Williamson, former drummer for the Woody Herman Orchestra.
The band will play two sets beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 12th at Tula’s Jazz Club, 2214 2nd Avenue in Seattle. The cover charge is $20.00 and reservations can be made by calling 206-443-4221 or via email at [email protected]. Tula’s is now featuring an all-new dinner menu designed by chef Matt Puch, the most recent addition to the Tula’s staff.

Vancouver’s Cellar Jazz Club closing February 25
Vancouver saxophonist and jazz club owner Cory Weeds sent out an email Saturday night announcing the closing of The Cellar Jazz Club on February 25, 2014.
It is with great sadness that I report as of February 25th, 2014 Cory Weeds’ Cellar Jazz Club will cease operations at 3611 West Broadway.
This decision has been the hardest that I have had to make in my life. Several factors contributed to the decision such as our inability to sign what we thought was a fair lease that would ensure our long term viability at this location, the flooding problem that has plagued us for the better part of four years every time it rains and the restaurant industry as a whole. It has been a challenge for me for 13 years but after a particularly difficult past few months it was becoming abundantly clear that as long as we carried on as we were, we would have trouble prospering.
Weeds has been in negotiation with his landlord to renew their long-term lease which expired last June. This week both sides agreed to part ways at the end of February, ending the club’s 13 years in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver.
Weeds’ intimate 80-seat Cellar Jazz Club had built a reputation as one of the premier “listening rooms” for jazz on the West Coast. He frequently brought in top international talent (who were probably working for less than they normally would) and partnered them with many of the stellar local rhythm sections in Vancouver.
Weeds does not plan on leaving the jazz business. He is continuing to present music at the club through February (upcoming shows include drum legend Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, Steve Davis, Peter Bernstein, Gary Smuylan and more) and will present concerts at various locations throughout 2014 while he looks for a new location for The Cellar. This on top of his performing schedule and running Cellar Live records which has a number of recordings currently on the radio charts.
Weeds concluded an email to musicians and supporters with: It’s been a wild ride and although I’m filled with sadness and some fear, I am looking forward to this next phase of my life, whatever that phase is and wherever it takes me. One thing I know for sure is that my passion for this music will never ever die and whatever happens I will continue to be a ‘jazz warrior.’
