Seattle Times: Noted jazz drummer adds pizazz to life with lessons for seniors

From The Seattle Times:

At age 76, George Griffin, a local jazz pioneer, knows drumming.

These days, Griffin lives in a Rainier Valley housing complex for seniors of limited income. The slow movements there are a long way from the jazz clubs of his younger days.

But he’s finding a different kind of reward with his fellow oldsters. He’s become the music teacher to people who, in some cases, had never before touched a musical instrument.

“I can’t hang out in the clubs like I used to,” says Griffin. “My reward now is in seeing people play the rhythm.”

Griffin was 5 when he first started banging away at cardboard boxes.

He was 16, still a junior at Garfield High School, when he was playing professionally with the Dave Lewis Combo, a legendary Northwest group.

John Coltrane. Charles Lloyd. Miles Davis.

Griffin remembers them.

In the 1960s, he was in the house band at the celebrated Penthouse club in downtown Seattle and opened for those greats.

At this particular complex, the 208-unit Courtland Place at Rainier Court, there are no assisted-living services. It is part of the Senior Housing Assistance Group for “independent seniors.”

Sunday Night: George Colligan Trio at The Copper Gate

Pianist George Colligan has visited Seattle a number of times. For many years he was based out of New York City and performed at the Earshot Jazz Festival and Jazz Alley as a member of Jack DeJohnette’s group, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and others.

Last Fall he accepted a position teaching jazz piano at Portland State University which has made his travels to Seattle more frequent … including this weekend.

Tonight (Saturday, August 18) he’ll be playing organ with Human Spirit at Egan’s Ballard Jam House (one set only starting at 7:00pm).

Tomorrow (Sunday, August 19), Colligan will switch over to piano and lead at trio at The Copper Gate featuring Jon Hamar on bass and Matt Jorgensen on drums. The show begins at 8:30pm. Seating is limited so arriving early is recommended.

Colligan’s residency in Seattle ends on Monday (August 20) when he’ll be performing with saxophonist Eric Alexander at Tula’s Jazz Club.

Make sure and check out one of these shows this weekend. You won’t be disappointed.

This Sunday on Jazz Northwest

Carlos Cascante and Tumbao played this month’s Seattle Art Museum Art of Jazz concert outdoors at the Olympic Sculpture Park by Elliott Bay.  A large crowd and lots of dancers joined the celebration in the Seattle sunshine.  Highlights from the concert will air on Jazz Northwest on 88.5, KPLU on Sunday, August 19 at 1 PM PDT.

Tumbao is a six-member Latin Jazz group playing music of Central and South America and the Caribbean and was formed about ten years ago in Seattle.  The group includes musicians from Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru as well as the US.  The group has two CDs and performs frequently around the Pacific Northwest.

The Art of Jazz Series is presented on the second Thursday of each month at The Seattle Art Museum, and outdoors at The Olympic Sculpture Park on Elliott Bay during Summer months.  Next month’s concert will feature Wellstone Conspiracy on September 13, returning to the downtown Seattle Art Museum. The series is coordinated by John Gilbreath of Earshot Jazz.

Jazz Northwest airs Sunday afternoons at 1 PDT and is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke, exclusively for 88.5 KPLU.  It is also available as a podcast from kplu.org following the air date.

Johnny Mandel conducts his music in concert August 12, 1 PM on Jazz Northwest, KPLU

Johnny Mandel conducting at Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend 2012, Bill Ramsay & Travis Ranney saxes. (Jim Levitt photo)

Johnny Mandel has enjoyed a seven-decade musical career that began in the 40s as a trombonist and arranger in big bands of Woody Herman, Count Basie and others.  He went on to greater fame as a film composer after settling in LA in the 50s, where he penned scores for “I Want To Live,” “The Sandpiper,” “The Americanization of Emily,” “Mash” and many others including popular songs “Close Enough for Love” and “A Time for Love”.

This July at Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend, the All-Star Big Band played a concert of The Music of Johnny Mandel, conducted by the composer and including nine of his best-known and celebrated compositions.  The 18 member band includes many individual soloists who are bandleaders and recording artists in their own right.  It’s with great pleasure and privilege we’re able to present this unique concert by a living legend, the Grammy-winning and NEA Jazz Master, Johnny Mandel.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced for radio by Jim Wilke, exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and kplu.org.  The program is heard each Sunday at 1 PM PDT and a podcast is available after the air date at kplu.org.
