Review: Thomas Marriott, Constraints and Liberations

from the October 2011 issue of Downbeat magazine:

Thomas Marriott, Constraints & Liberations
Origin Records 82577
4 1/2 Stars

The music on Constraints & Liberations operates and resides in that state between dreams and reality. The record slowly simmers with a restrained intensity and rarely comes to a boil.

The soloists are stellar and never fail to tell engaging stories. Thomas Marriott’s trumpet sound is as lush and inviting as it comes. “Up From Under” and “Clues” give him plenty of room to slowly stretch out, like a tall man coming to from a deep sleep and remembering how to walk. Pianist Gary Versace is a master at taking simple ideas and developing them until he’s exhausted all possibilities. His solo on “Clues” is exciting, as his increase in dynamics and intensity coincides with the most fruitful developments of his initial statement. Hans Teuber possesses a complex subtone sound and one of the fresher tenor approaches today.

Marriott’s rhythm section kills. The bass/drums tandem of Jeff Johnson and John Bishop holds down the Hal Galper Trio and is twothirds of the trio Scenes. Their significant time together has allowed them to share a common musical consciousness and approach.

Leading Questions: Bill Anschell

When I was 14 I was a miscast classical clarinetist with no real interest in classical music or clarinet. Or jazz, for that matter. My guilty pleasure was playing pop tunes by ear on my family’s upright piano.

Practice makes me feel and play better. Unfortunately, the buzz usually wears off by the time I get to the gig.

Some of my best ideas come to me on planes and in hotel rooms. That’s where I do a lot of my writing -– both words and music.

Fear is what stops a lot of musicians from growing. Once they start getting recognition and attention they’re afraid to sound bad, so they stop taking chances. I’ve seen it happen to so many good players who could have kept getting better; when my ego goes south on me I give it a good spanking.

As I get older, I’ve realized that touch and phrasing are more important forms of “chops” than being able to play fast. Why did it take me so long to figure it out?

In the big scheme of things, what really matters is the big scheme of things. Individual notes, not so much. Arc of a solo and telling a story, much more so.

People ask me questions while I’m playing the piano sometimes. When I try to answer, I speak rhythmically and drool.

Discipline is something easily transferable from jazz to other walks of life. Jazz artists learn to identify their own areas of weakness and devise a plan to remedy them. The skill set of self-assessment and -improvement is a key part of personal growth, and explains why jazz artists who move into other fields or have secondary areas of interest tend to do so well at them.

Smooth-jazz sax man Kyle Wolverton comes home

from The Seattle Times:

When Seattle smooth-jazz station KWJZ vanished into the ether last winter, its wounded fans rained down protests, including nearly 100 emails, comments and phone calls to The Seattle Times.

Well, smooth-jazz lovers, calm down. Though KWJZ is isn’t coming back, the woman behind much of the momentum there, Carol Handley, has done the next best thing.

On July 24, Handley launched a 24/7 streaming web station, Smooth in Seattle, to augment the production company she started after KWJZ’s demise, Carol Handley Presents. (Access both at www.carolhandleypresents.com)

One of Handley’s first projects is a concert by a bitingly funky, Juanita-raised smooth-jazz saxophonist named Kyle Wolverton, who plays the Kirkland Performance Center Saturday with a knockout band. Though Wolverton performed at Chateau Ste. Michelle in 2009, this marks his first ever concert as a pro in his hometown.
