The Marc Seales Trio played the January Art of Jazz Concert at The Seattle Art Museum and highlights from the concert will air on Jazz Northwest Sunday January 18 at 1 PM (Pacific) on 88.5 KPLU. Marc Seales has spent recent Summers in Paris and has composed a suite of music reflecting Paris neighborhoods which will be the focus of his next CD to be issued shortly. Three pieces from the suite are included in this concert.

Pianist Marc Seales is a Professor of Jazz Studies at The University of Washington, bassist Chuck Deardorf heads the Jazz Department at Cornish College, and D’Vonne Lewis is a fast rising jazz star and one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in Seattle.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88-5 KPLU. The program airs Sundays at 1 PM (Pacific) and is simultaneously streamed to the internet. It is also available as a podcast following the airdate.

Seattle Times: Irvin Mayfield to deliver New Orleans-style jazz

from The Seattle Times:

The young, jazz trumpet player Irvin Mayfield has loaned his tutelage to colleges, major orchestras and arts organizations. He founded the Institute of Jazz Culture at Dillard University in his hometown of New Orleans. For six years, he’s been his city’s official “Cultural Ambassador,” an appointment made by Louisiana’s governing bodies.

An accomplished composer, band leader and academician, Mayfield turned out to be a far better teacher than student. Getting into school was never a problem. Staying there was the challenge. Juilliard offered him a scholarship, which he turned down to attend the University of New Orleans, whose jazz- studies program was led by Ellis Marsalis. After about a year, Mayfield dropped out.

“I’d go to class and the instructors wouldn’t be there,” said Mayfield, 31, who performs next week in Seattle. “They’d be on the road, touring. I thought, ‘OK, that’s an interesting concept.’

“A degree is an asset, but it doesn’t mean anything by itself. It’s just another asset. So is being persuasive, having good personality, being smart.”

Mostly, Mayfield just played, forming an Afro-Cuban jazz group when he was 21. He listened and learned. Recording contracts came along. And eventually, people figured they could learn something from him. He has worked for years to make “the academy and the workplace meet each other,” he said. To that end, he formed the 16-member New Orleans Jazz Orchestra when he was 25.

Sunday on Jazz Northwest

Matt Wilson
Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts at Jazz Port Townsend – Gary Versace, Terell Stafford, Matt Wilson, Martin Wind (photo by Jim Wilke)

Drummer Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts performance capped the 2008 Jazz Port Townsend Festival in McCurdy Pavilion. The complete concert, with enthusiastic audience participation and community sing, will air on Jazz Northwest from 88.5, KPLU on Sunday, January 11 at 1 pm Pacific Time.

Matt Wilson’s exuberant drive sparks a variety of contemporary ensembles: Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, Dena DeRose Trio, Buster Williams Something More, Bill Mays Trio, Ray Anderson, Jane Ira Bloom and many others. (Perhaps a shorter list would be those he hasn’t played with!)

Although his infectious playfulness permeates every group he’s in, Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts gives free reign to his creativity and imagination. He thrives on surprises, and spontaneity is at the heart of this quartet. Pianist Gary Versace, trumpeter Terell Stafford and bassist Martin Wind open up and enjoy the many possibilities and challenges of this group. You’ll have to listen to “Feel the Sway” that caps this concert, this is a band that puts fun back in jazz!

Thanks to the musicians, Centrum and its staff for the opportunity to present this music on Jazz Northwest.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU. It airs Sundays at 1 PM Pacific on 88.5, KPLU and is also streamed to the internet at kplu.org . The program is also available as a podcast after the airdate.

from The Seattle Times:

It’s January, so at EMP, it’s time for jazz.

BAKE’S PLACE: Isabella du Graf Quartet with Evan Flory Barnes, bass; D’vonne Lewis, drums and Josh Rawlings, piano
from Earshot Jazz: It is wonderful to see Isabella Du Graf bringing her young quartet to Bakes this Friday. Too often this iconic Seattle jazz venue sticks with the tried and true, rarely letting fresh new talent grace the stage. Not true with Du Graf, who has been recognized by Downbeat magazine twice before she has even graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music. Get out to Issaquah and support this venerable Seattle institution and encourage them to book more forward thinking acts at the same time. That makes it a twofer – more bang for your buck in these hard times.

2009 JazzVox Series

By Elizabeth Graham

It is the best kept secret in the jazz world right here in Seattle! OK it’s not really a secret any more but actually a fantastically successful first season for the JazzVox concert series hosted by Nich Anderson. He is one talented singer in his own right with the lauded Seattle Jazz Singers and BlueStreet Jazz Voices. This has been a glorious dream come true for Nich, and I for one have been so privileged to see the brightest vocal jazz stars shine in the comfort of his own home (in Auburn).

Vocalists including the incomparable Nancy King, John Proulx, Roz Corral, Pinky Waters, Marguerite Juenemann, and Kelley Johnson have graced his stage with extraordinary class and excellence, each bringing their own personal style and unique gifts. Not only will you be treated to exceptional artists from near and far, but after the show, a sumptuous gourmet buffet beckons you, lovingly created by Patti Carr, a close friend and colleague of Nich’s. She also hosts JazzVox concerts in her lovely new home on Camano Island with husband, Andy Carr, a sensational pianist for the BlueStreet Jazz Voices. I had the pleasure of seeing Jackie Ryan sing so brilliantly in their home, as well as Seattle’s own, ever-amazing Greta Matassa, who shared the evening with Patti Wicks, a pianist/singer of great distinction.

It goes without saying that the musicians who accompany each vocalist in the series are also a rare treat, with the likes of fine bassists Doug Miller and Chuck Kistler, famed guitarist Andre Bush, and piano phenoms Randy Halberstadt and Bill Anschell.

The 2009 JazzVox concert line-up (through June) is as follows:

Sat, January 10 – Kathleen Grace & Darin Clendenin – Auburn
Sun, January 11 – Kathleen Grace & Darin Clendenin – Camano Island

Fri, March 6 – Stephanie Nakasian & Hod O’Brien – Camano Island

Fri, April 17 – John Proulx, Thomas Marriott, & Chuck Kistler – Camano Island

Sat, April 18 – John Proulx scat workshop – Auburn
Sat, April 18 – John Proulx, Thomas Marriott, & Chuck Kistler – Auburn

Sat, May 9 – Chris McNulty w/ TBD – Auburn
Sun, May 10 – Chris McNulty w/ TBD – Camano Island

Sat, June 13 – Nancy King and Glen Moore “King & Moore” – Auburn
Sun, June 14 – Nancy King and Glen Moore “King & Moore” – Camano Island

What an array of gifted artists – not to be missed! If this sounds like exactly your cup of tea, it’s so easy to be a part of by going to JazzVox.com and checking out all the fabulous artists and concerts, previously held and upcoming. After making your selections, simply reserve your seat via advance donation either by check or PayPal online. You will be assured of a beautiful evening with good friends, great cuisine and an intimate setting to hear the very finest vocal jazz. It is truly a gem of a concert series and a special gift to the Seattle Jazz Scene – we’ll see you there!

EMP’s Jazz in January program continues to shrink

EMP’s annual Jazz in January series runs this weekend, January 9-10, with a scaled-back lineup compared to previous years.

It seems no Northwest jazz series would be complete without an appearance by the Roosevelt and Garfield High School Big Bands and they are again featured here with Cuong Vu and Thomas Marriott making a guest appearance with each band respectively. The concert is Friday, January 9 at 7:00pm in the Sky Church.

Saturday’s program starts with Jim Wilke interviewing drum legend Han Bennink at the JBL Theater starting at 3:00pm. The incredibly creative Bennink should be an entertaining interviewee who’ll keep Wilke on his toes.

Jazz in January concludes Saturday night with a double-bill featuring Cuong Vu’s trio featuring Stomu Takeishi on bass and Ted Poor on drums. The trio is supporting their critically acclaimed new CD “Vu-tet” and if you didn’t see them at the 2007 Earshot Jazz Festival or at Meany Hall in 2008, make sure and catch this show. Cellist, bassist, composer and visual artist Paul Rucker opens (click here to view photo of Paul Rucker performing at the 2008 Earshot Jazz Festival). Saturday, January 10 at 7:00pm in the Sky Church.
