The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents the J&J Music and Broken Time Records Showcase for one night only. The first set will be a solo set from pianist Eric Vaughn. The second set will feature the Michael Owcharuk Sextet. Band members are Michael Owcharuk (piano), Nate Omdal (bass), Mike Hamms (drums), Jim Knodle (trumpet), Beth Fleenor (clarinets) and Jacob Brietbach (violin). Set time on Thursday January 31st is 7:30pm and doors will open at 6pm.

Jazz soloist and trio leader, Eric Vaughn has been playing the piano since he began lessons at age 9 with Sal Mosca, student of Lenny Tristanio. Eric earned his BA and MA in music performance from the University of San Francisco in 1977. Vaughn’s playing is inspired by some of the Jazz greats of the past and present, including Art Tatum, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock, among others.

Eric has performed across the U.S., Europe, Canada, North Africa and played for the U.S. forces in Guam and Hawaii. Eric has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutchinson, Eddie Moore, Bert Wilson, and Santana, among many others. Eric, otherwise known as “the piano man” eats, sleeps and breathes music. The skill and knowledge that he brings to his music is only surpassed by the insurmountable energy and fury with which he plays. Eric is thrilled to celebrate the release of his new solo album The Chaotic World We Live In on Broken Time Records.

Michael Owcharuk is a composer and pianist hailing from New York City. After childhood piano lessons and extensive travels he moved to Seattle to pursue music as his calling. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Composition from Cornish College of the Arts (06), where he studied composition with Bern Herbolsheimer and piano with Jovino Santos Neto. Michael has had his compositions performed by: The Seattle Chamber Players, The Jim Knapp Big Band, The St. Helen’s String Quartet, and The Esoterics. Currently, he composes for and performs with his trio, performs music for Hogwash, an improvised tall tale, composes chamber music, and works as a jazz pianist, accompanist, and band leader.
