Sheryl Bailey and Cynthia Mullis at Tula’s tonight

Thursday, November 11; 7:30pm – 11:00pm

Tula’s Restaurant and Nightclub
2214 Second Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121
tel: 206-443-4221

There’s no description more apt for Sheryl Bailey than “A sizzling guitar goddess.” She is a NYC based musician with incredible chops and impecable taste. Just Jazz Guitar magazine rates her “among the best bop guitar players with a fresh approach and something new.” And Vintage Guitar terms her “one of jazz guitars current front runners.” Sheryl’s most recent recording “A New Promise” is a tribute to late guitar great Emily Remler, with the all-star Pittsburgh band, Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra.

Cynthia Mullis is a versatile, accomplished saxophonist and jazz artist. She lived and worked in New York City from 1993-2000. During her time in NYC, Cynthia studied with Jimmy Heath and played with the all-women big band Diva. Since moving to Seattle from New York City in 2000, she has become an active member of the Pacific Northwest music scene. Cynthia is a valued side-person in numerous ensembles, including The Jason Parker Quartet and the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra.

While in NYC, Cynthia recorded and performed with Sheryl Bailey. Cynthia and Sheryl will be performing together again for the first time in over a decade at Tula’s on November 11th. It will be an exciting evening of jazz originals and standards, with Jose Martinez on drums and Chris Symer on bass.

Photos: Bill Frisell at The Triple Door

from EyeShotJazz.com:

What a treat to see Bill Frisell play again in Seattle with Eyvind Kang and Rudy Royston as the Earshot Jazz Festival heads for its last 4 days.

In the Beautiful Dreamers trio, Frisell and violist Eyvind Kang join arms with drummer Rudy Royston to take a rustic, wind-blown repertoire (Blind Willie Johnson’s “Nobody’s Fault” sits alongside Little Anthony and the Imperials’ “Goin’ Out of My Head”) and infuse it with, well, dreamscapes and ethereality and percussive grit and tussle. In the studio, the band played things rather straight – minimal electronic manipulation and samples.

Photos: Rufus Reid Trio at Tula’s

from EyeShotJazz:

Note: Rufus Reid Trio is performing through Tuesday at Tula’s Jazz Club.
Call 206-443-4221 for reservations.

Rufus Reid at Tula’s with Steve Allee, piano and Duduka Da Fronseca on drums. What a great classic jazz sound. An accomplished sideman, a visionary educator, and a composer of note, bassist Rufus Reid possesses one of the richest and most generous tones in jazz today. Having been the bassist of choice for dozens of major artists, including Dexter Gordon, Thad Jones, and Nancy Wilson, Rufus Reid here leads his own trio. They will be at Tula’s through November 2nd.

Born in Atlanta, GA in 1944, Rufus Reid came of age in Sacramento, California where he played the trumpet in junior high and high school. Upon graduation Reid entered the United States Air Force as a trumpet player, where he first became seriously interested in the bass. After completing his term in the Air Force, Reid moved to Seattle to study bass with James Harnett of the Seattle Symphony, and he went on to study bass performance at Northwestern University.

Photos: Dave Peck at The Chapel

from EyeShotJazz:

Dave Peck playing solo at the Chapel Performance Space Friday night as the Earshot Jazz Festival continues. The sound was luscious and sweet. ”Dave Peck’s rich, melancholic music is one of the great pleasures of Seattle jazz, and how welcome the pianist’s intensified recording and performing schedule is. Still in the afterglow of the June release of Peck’s lovely Modern Romance, Peck here performed in the intimate Chapel Performance Space in celebration of his new solo album, Songbook Volume 1. “
