Barney McClure has been a boatbuilder, Mayor of Port Townsend, State Representative, Events Organizer and more, but it’s as a jazz musician we know him best. Whether playing piano or organ, leading his own groups, or backing singers and touring artists, Barney McClure has been a prominent part of the Northwest jazz scene for many years. After an 11 year sojourn in Alaska, he’s back in the Seattle area and in one of his first major appearances since his return, he played an Art of Jazz concert at The Seattle Art Museum. Jazz Northwest recorded the concert and it airs Sunday, April 24 at 1 PM PDT on 88.5, KPLU and kplu.org.

Joining Barney McClure at the piano are Clipper Anderson, bass, Dean Hodges on drums and Ernesto Pediangco on percussion. in a concert including both standards and original compositions. The Art of Jazz concerts are presented by Earshot Jazz and the Seattle Art Museum with the support of 88.5 KPLU and the Seattle Weekly.

PHILADELPHIA — The world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, long considered one of the best in the nation, will be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection – an apparent first in recent history for a major U.S. orchestra.

Board chairman Richard Worley said members made a nearly unanimous vote Saturday to file for reorganization in a federal bankruptcy court in Philadelphia after a “long meeting, thoughtful meeting, emotional meeting.”

“We’re running low on cash, we’re running a deficit, and we have to put ourselves in a position to attract investment funds to help us,” Worley told reporters.

Allison Vulgamore, president and chief executive officer, also cited a “tremendous decline” in audiences over the past five years.

Officials stressed, however, that concerts would go on as scheduled, including the evening’s performance of a Mahler symphony. And they said a revitalization campaign was planned to increase revenues by about two-thirds and bring in new art and audiences.

The successful Starbucks jazz program and 16th annual Hot Java Cool Jazz returns to The Paramount Theatre. Seattle-area high school jazz musicians from Garfield, Roosevelt, Edmonds-Woodway, Mountlake Terrace, and Newport high schools take the stage in a showcase of the city’s finest young talent, performing with their big bands. As part of Starbucks’ ongoing commitment to the local youth arts community, all proceeds from ticket sales will go to support each school’s music program. Billy Bang, a violinist whose gritty, expressive and spirited playing earned admiration in contemporary jazz circles, died on Monday at his home in Harlem. He was 63.

The cause was complications of lung cancer, said Jean-Pierre Leduc, his friend and agent.

Prominent as a bandleader and a sideman throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Mr. Bang achieved his most substantial success with the 2001 album “Vietnam: The Aftermath,” which featured music inspired by his time serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, played with peers who had also served. The album — and a 2005 sequel, “Vietnam: Reflections,” which included Vietnamese musicians — in turn inspired “Redemption Song,” a 2008 documentary film about him.

Vocalist and author Katy Bourne published a nice piece on Ron Hudson that we’d like to share:

The Seattle jazz community lost a dear friend with the recent death of photographer Ron Hudson. For over three decades, Ron photographed some of the greatest artists in jazz history. With a keen eye and a fierce passion for the music, Ron captured intimate moments from hundreds of jazz performances. Many of his images were shot at the Monterey Jazz Festival, which Ron had a special affinity for. In 2007, Ron published a collection of his elegant black and white photographs in a book called “Right Down Front: Ron Hudson Jazz Images.”

I first met Ron in 2005 when I went to his studio to buy a photograph of Pat Metheny. We hit it off immediately In the spring of 2006, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ron for an article in “All About Jazz.” Ron not only had a deep love for jazz but also an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the music. He shared dozens of stories about the musicians he met and the photographs he took of them. I spent many an enchanting afternoon with Ron. Long after the article was published, we remained friends. Ron loved Big Bands, and occasionally he would join me for a Garfield Jazz Band performance. Ron was a strong advocate for jazz education, and traveled extensively with the Roosevelt High Jazz Band. In Ron’s words, it is the “young kids” who will “perpetuate the music.”

Ron was an extraordinary ambassador for jazz, a master of vision and light and a very good friend. I will miss him a lot. Luckily, his wonderful stories will live on in his photographs.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held Monday, April 11 at 7pm at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley. There will be performances from the Roosevelt High School Jazz band as well as various artists from Origin Records. Pettis, the four-time nominee and 2010 winner of Earshot Golden Ear Awards “Northwest Vocalist of the Year,” traveled to Kobe, Japan in 2006 to perform as a guest artist at KAVC Hall as First Place winner of the Seattle-Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist Audition.

Her debut performance at Jazz Alley will serve as a fundraiser for Japan earthquake relief. Donated covers collected will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

“I have felt a connection to the people of Japan ever since my visit to Kobe. The their warm hospitality and enthusiasm for jazz has left a lifelong impression on me and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to give back in some small way,” Pettis said.

Pettis’ performance will feature a different rhythm section each night. On Tueday, April 19, Pettis will be joined by Darin Clendenin (piano), Clipper Anderson (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums), all of which appeared on her recent OA2 release, Here In The Moment. On Wednesday, April 20, she will be joined by her rhythm section from May I Come In? – Randy Halberstadt (piano), Jeff Johnson (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums).
