Monterey Jazz Festival still kickin’ at 54

from The Seattle Times:

MONTEREY, Calif. — “Long live Monterey!” shouted 80-year-old tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins Sunday night, as he bid the dancing, roaring arena crowd adieu after a joyous 90-minute-plus set that closed the 54th edition of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Head now topped with a mushroom cap of frizzy white hair, back bowed with age, but still prowling the stage for that perfect phrase, Rollins could have been an emblem of the Monterey Jazz Festival itself — which combined historic wisdom and youthful zest.

Earlier in the day, the festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra — an all-star band composed of high-school kids — played one of the most compelling, swinging sets of the three-day weekend, with particular kudos going to samurai-slicing trombonist Kyle Molitor, svelte vocalist Hope Flores and bronze-toned alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley.

Performances by young players nurtured in Seattle — drummer Kassa Overall and pianist Aaron Parks — also spoke to the music’s bright future.

Pianist David Haney Purchases Cadence Magazine

via Earshot Jazz Magazine:

It has been a busy summer for David Haney, pianist, composer, and sometimes Seattleite. In July, he completed his 13th and 14th albums for the New York-based C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records, featuring drum legend Andrew Cyrille and bassist Dominic Duval. He was also featured on the July cover of Cadence magazine. Not long after, Haney purchased Cadence upon learning that it had plans to cease publication. Cadence is a thorough on-going documentation of the improvised music scene for this and future generations. Since 1976, Cadence has reviewed some 54,000 different books, records, CDs, videos, DVDs, and tapes and offered monthly worldwide coverage to a worldwide readership. Haney plans to continue both online and printed editions as well as educational features geared more towards universities and colleges. Notably, Haney has 25 years experience in the magazine publishing field. He hopes for more coverage of Seattle events and encourages writers and others who are interested in contributing to email him directly at [email protected].

Review: Thomas Marriott, Constraints and Liberations

from the October 2011 issue of Downbeat magazine:

Thomas Marriott, Constraints & Liberations
Origin Records 82577
4 1/2 Stars

The music on Constraints & Liberations operates and resides in that state between dreams and reality. The record slowly simmers with a restrained intensity and rarely comes to a boil.

The soloists are stellar and never fail to tell engaging stories. Thomas Marriott’s trumpet sound is as lush and inviting as it comes. “Up From Under” and “Clues” give him plenty of room to slowly stretch out, like a tall man coming to from a deep sleep and remembering how to walk. Pianist Gary Versace is a master at taking simple ideas and developing them until he’s exhausted all possibilities. His solo on “Clues” is exciting, as his increase in dynamics and intensity coincides with the most fruitful developments of his initial statement. Hans Teuber possesses a complex subtone sound and one of the fresher tenor approaches today.

Marriott’s rhythm section kills. The bass/drums tandem of Jeff Johnson and John Bishop holds down the Hal Galper Trio and is twothirds of the trio Scenes. Their significant time together has allowed them to share a common musical consciousness and approach.

Leading Questions: Bill Anschell

When I was 14 I was a miscast classical clarinetist with no real interest in classical music or clarinet. Or jazz, for that matter. My guilty pleasure was playing pop tunes by ear on my family’s upright piano.

Practice makes me feel and play better. Unfortunately, the buzz usually wears off by the time I get to the gig.

Some of my best ideas come to me on planes and in hotel rooms. That’s where I do a lot of my writing -– both words and music.

Fear is what stops a lot of musicians from growing. Once they start getting recognition and attention they’re afraid to sound bad, so they stop taking chances. I’ve seen it happen to so many good players who could have kept getting better; when my ego goes south on me I give it a good spanking.

As I get older, I’ve realized that touch and phrasing are more important forms of “chops” than being able to play fast. Why did it take me so long to figure it out?

In the big scheme of things, what really matters is the big scheme of things. Individual notes, not so much. Arc of a solo and telling a story, much more so.

People ask me questions while I’m playing the piano sometimes. When I try to answer, I speak rhythmically and drool.

Discipline is something easily transferable from jazz to other walks of life. Jazz artists learn to identify their own areas of weakness and devise a plan to remedy them. The skill set of self-assessment and -improvement is a key part of personal growth, and explains why jazz artists who move into other fields or have secondary areas of interest tend to do so well at them.
