Update: Help For Jim Knapp

from Doug Ramsey’s Rifftides:

The fund-raising effort to aid composer, arranger, trumpeter and bandleader Jim Knapp is progressing slowly. Knapp recently lost his right foot and part of his lower leg in an operation to combat diabetes. In a message, he writes, “My recovery is going well. I have a prosthesis now, so I am bipedal again.” His financial recuperation is less stable. Friends and fellow musicians headed by saxophonist Steve Griggs have set a goal of $30,000 to defray Knapp’s medical expenses, which far exceed his insurance coverage. A performance of Knapp’s music earlier this month helped, but Griggs reports that the total is $4,485, more than $25,000 short of the target. He and his group have set up a donation website here.

The benefit concert November 2 at Seattle’s Triple Door included this performance of “Secular Breathing,” the title piece of a 2003 Knapp album. The soloists are Mark Taylor, Steve Treseler and Stuart MacDonald, tenor saxophones; John Hansen, piano; and Jon Hamar, bass.

The other members of the Knapp Orchestra were Jim Dejoie, baritone saxophone; Jay Thomas, Brad Allison and Vern Sielert, trumpets; Tom Varner, French horn; Jeff Hay and Chris Stover, trombones; and Matt Jorgensen, drums.

Bassist Chuck Deardorf swings back into action

from The Seattle Times:

Seattle bassist extraordinaire and Cornish jazz professor Chuck Deardorf, equally at home on acoustic and electric models, celebrates the release of his splendid, swinging and thoughtful album, “Transparence” (Origin), one of the top local releases of the year. Deardorf, who recently had a successful kidney transplant, is back in action, much to the relief of the Seattle jazz community. He is joined by Seattle saxophonist Mark Taylor and Los Angeles-based guitarist Bruce Forman.

8 p.m. Saturday, Poncho Concert Theatre, 710 E. Roy St., Seattle; $10-$20 (206-726-5030 or www.cornish.edu).

Eric Barber’s MetriLodic + Bad Luck at The Chapel this Friday

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2011
Eric Barber’s MetriLodic + Bad Luck

THE CHAPEL PERFORMANCE SPACE
Good Shepherd Center (Wallingford), 4649 Sunnyside Ave N
8:00 PM; $5 – $15 sliding scale suggested donation at the door (cash/checks only).

Eric Barber’s MetriLodic is an all-original, freely improvised trio that breaks most of the rules of groove-based ensembles. Featuring Eric Barber on sax and electronics, this band creates a sonic palette that is simultaneously complex and entertaining. With longtime collaborators PK on electric bass and Byron Vannoy on drums, this band take rhythm, meter, groove, and melody in a new direction.

Bad Luck is a sonic outlet to be reckoned with. Over half a decade after their first performance, drummer Chris Icasiano and saxophonist Neil Welch continue to develop a unique musical voice together. In the highly trodden medium of drums and saxophone, Bad Luck proves that there is much left to be said. Performing all original compositions, the pair use live loops and pedals to create an astounding range of sound, quickly shifting into fierce improvisations, sound art, and carefully constructed harmonic palettes.

Photos: Travis Shook Trio at Tula’s

by Daniel Sheehan / EyeShotJazz:

Earshot Jazz Festival 2011 presented the Travis Shook Trio at Tula’s Jazz Club. This was one of my favorite performances of the festival so far. Travis with Matt Jorgensen (drums) and Essiet Essiet (bass) played some really cool sounding jazz from some standards, to Beetles tunes to his own compositions. Travis – a former Seattleite who was Earshot Golden Ear Award winner for best emerging jazz artist in 1992 and 1993 – gained early notoriety with drum legend Tony Williams, vocalist Betty Carter, and his own brilliant trio releases.

November 12 – Diane Schuur at Northshore Performing Arts Center

Two-time Grammy Award winner and one of contemporary jazz’s leading vocalist/pianists, Diane Schuur brings her distinctive jazz styling to the Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. NE, Bothell). Schuur and her band will perform in concert Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 PM.

A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the ’40s and ’50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents’ generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and ’60s. Born in Tacoma, Washington, in December 1953, Schuur grew up in nearby Auburn, Washington, where her father was a police captain. Nicknamed Deedles at a young age, Schuur discovered the world of jazz via her father, a piano player, and her mother, who kept a formidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington records in the house.

In a recording career that spans nearly three decades – and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations – Schuur’s music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape. In her latest CD release The Gathering, Schuur turns a corner into a brand new lane, infusing her jazz sensibilities into ten country-brewed tunes from such seminal songwriters as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Cochran, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller and others.

Ticket prices for this special event are Adults/$45, Seniors/$40, and Youth under 17 yrs/$25. Tickets may be purchased online at www.npacf.org or by calling (425) 984-2471.

Photos: Celebrating Coltrane and Mingus: We Four

from EyeShotJazz:

Seattle photographer Michael Craft photographed this performance and these are his pictures. Among tributes to John Coltrane, We Four ranks as the most soulful and masterful: joining the tenor-sax hard bopper, Javon Jackson, was piano master Mulgrew Miller, peerless bassist Nat Reeves, and – here’s the clincher – NEA Jazz Master and Kind of Blue drum vet Jimmy Cobb. John Coltrane remains one of jazz music’s most revered artists, nearly 44 years after his death. For this concert, the collective We Four proves that the saxophonist’s music can still electrify audiences with its combination of potent swing and spiritual depth. Featuring legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb, the 82-year-old provides much of this band’s heat. Cobb is joined in We Four by tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Peter Washington, a new band of highly esteemed New York jazz players, all of whom feel a special connection to John Coltrane.

Earshot Jazz Festival 2011 presented the Jerry Granelli Trio at Tula’s last Sunday night. Drummer Jerry Granelli, whom Jazz Times called “one of those uncategorizable veteran percussionists who’s done it all,” appeared with his longtime trio of Danny Oore (sax) and Simon Fisk (bass/cello). Partway through the second set, Jerry invited vocalist Jay Clayton up to join them.
