Tula’s Jazz Club listed as a property sold to developers

A story in today’s (September 1) Puget Sound Business Journal lists the building occupied by Tula’s Jazz Club as one of the properties to be sold to an Atlanta developer who has plans for a 124-unit building.

The deal has not been finalized according to the article, but news of a sale is not surprising considering the building housing Mama’s Mexican Kitchen was sold earlier this year for $4.5 million. Seattle Jazz Scene spoke with Tula’s manager Jason Moore at the time of the Mama’s Mexican Kitchen sale and Moore commented that a sale of the Tula’s building in the future was not unexpected.

Seattle Jazz Scene will post updates as we hear more.

This Sunday on Jazz Northwest

On Jazz Northwest this week, we’ll feature a tune by this all-star group on the 26th anniversary of the above recording. Except for the late Bud Shank, all were teaching and performing again this week at Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend. Jiggs Whigham will also play with a quartet this Sunday evening (7/26) at Tula’s in Seattle.

Also on this week’s show is a sample from a forthcoming CD by John Pizzarelli, playing and singing a beautiful ballad from the post-Beatles music of Paul McCartney. The CD “Midnight McCartney” will be released in September. John Pizzarelli is at Jazz Alley through this Sunday. Also, Jay Thomas & the Cantaloupes at SAM, Barney McClure plays organ with the Central Washington Big Band, Mimi Fox and Greta Matassa team up, and new CDs by Michael Waldrop Big Band and Bobby Medina are included on this week’s show along with some best bets for live jazz in the coming week.
Jazz Northwest airs on Sundays at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streams at kplu.org. The program is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU and podcasts can be streamed anytime at jazznw.org .

Jazz Port Townsend: a great getaway

from The Seattle Times:

Jazz Port Townsend, which gets under way Thursday (July 23), has a different feel from other festivals, probably because its final weekend is the culmination of a weeklong workshop.

That means the crowd in Port Townsend and out at Fort Worden is full of aspiring young musicians, and their parents, plus other fans who are really listening to the music.

Fold that attentiveness into three nights of rolling performances in intimate venues, concerts in a grand pavilion with views out its doors of evergreen trees and sky, a pleasantly salty sea breeze and PT’s gingerbread Victorian B&Bs, and you have the elements of a great jazz getaway.

If you can’t make the ferry crossing next weekend, note that [Steve] Wilson is offering Seattleites a sneak preview (with a homegrown quintet including pianist Marc Seales and drummer Matt Jorgensen) Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, at Tula’s (206-443-4221 or tulas.com).
