This new transmitter will allow KBCS to broadcast up to 3 different program channels to anyone in the Seattle area with a HD radio receiver. Current (analog) radios will continue to receive KBCS loud and clear at 91.3 FM with no significant changes.

iTunes Radio
Head over to the Radio section of iTunes, and under the ‘Eclectic’ category, you’ll now see KBCS listed with hundreds of other stations across the globe.

iPhone or iPod Touch – KBCS is now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch through the new Public Radio Tuner application as well. After downloading Public Radio Tuner from the iTunes store for free, you can easily tune into live KBCS programming on both of these portables devices.

Smokey Joe just can’t stay away — and we love him for it.

“Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” a tour of the Tony-nominated Broadway revue, is returning to Jazz Alley after a well-reviewed stop there last year. The jukebox musical features 39 popular rock and R&B songs — many from the songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Hits in the revue include “On Broadway,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Stand By Me,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Love Potion #9” and “I’m a Woman.” On Broadway from 1995 to 2000, “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” is the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history.

The cast includes Ron Lucas, Tony Perry, Safiya Fredricks, Dawn Driver, Christopher Brasfield, Famicia Ward and Jonathan Victorian, with Darrius Frowner (piano), Danny Hoefer (guitar), Chris Symer (bass), Larry Holloway (bass) and Milo Petersen (drums) comprising the band.

“Smokey Joe’s Cafe” opens Wednesday and plays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Dec. 21 at Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave., Seattle; $26.50-$28.50 (206-441-9729 or www.jazzalley.com).

Jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter is 41, a husband, father of two young children, with tattoos on both arms. He resembles the actor Matthew Fox, who plays the surgeon and tortured soul Jack Shephard, from TV’s “Lost.”

A serious and earnest musician (although he would probably resist that description) Hunter, too has had near-paralyzing bouts of torment in the form of artistic angst.

“If you asked me a few years ago,” said Hunter, who performs with his trio at Jazz Alley Tuesday and Wednesday, “I would have said I couldn’t stand anything I played. I was going to stop playing. I was done with it. I felt like I couldn’t come up with any more tricks. The next stage would have been lighting myself on fire.”

Hunter, who has a distinct way with words, did not quit playing or resort to onstage flambé but rather embarked on a new direction with his music — something simple, spare and naturally suited to him, and more importantly, to his instrument, which is a rhythm instrument at heart, not a melodic one. Despite that fact, jazz guitarists are often obliged to play like horn players, at least if they want to be considered true masters.

from Earshot Jazz: The Roosevelt Jazz Band presents its ninth annual performance of Duke Ellington’s Jazz Nutcracker. Composed towards the end of Ellington’s career, the Jazz Nutcracker is more than a jazzy arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Christmas-time classic. Instead Ellington re-imagined Tchaikovsky’s original and brought a new collection of timbres and rhythms to the table. Along the way, Ellington renamed the movements to reflect the modern and hip sensibility of his composition. The “Dance of the Reed Pipes,” became, for example, “Toot Toot Tootie Toot” and “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” became “Sugar Rum Cherry.” Performing Arts Theatre, Roosevelt High School (1410 NE 66th St).
