On September 15th, the City of Seattle issued a proclamation declaring that October 4, 2014 will be Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Day. The proclamation recognizes SRJO’s twenty years of programming in big band jazz performance and jazz education. SRJO’s co-artistic director Michael Brockman accepted the certificate from the Seattle City Council.

The City of Kirkland is also honoring SRJO with a “Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Day” on the October 5, 2014. The Kirkland proclamation will be read from the stage during SRJO’s October 5th concert by Kirkland’s Deputy Mayor Penny Sweet at the Kirkland Performance Center

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Day coincides with the launch of SRJO’s twentieth anniversary season with a weekend of concerts titled “Basie Bash: SRJO Celebrates Twenty Years.”

The Earshot Jazz Festival will be upon us shortly, but you might consider taking in the Eastside Jazz Club “Extravaganza” Saturday as an appetizer to the main course. The intrepid club presents regional jazz artists every month, striving to keep jazz alive at the other end of Highway 520, and puts its all into this annual Bellevue celebration.

Zesty Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto and his Quinteto headline the show. If you haven’t seen the group lately, this might be a good time, as Santos Neto has written some wonderful new material, which stirs up jazz improv with a variety of Brazilian rhythms. One of the most consistently satisfying and scintillating ensembles on the Seattle scene, the group features Ben Thomas (vibraphone), Chuck Deardorf (bass), Mark Ivester (drums) and Jeff Busch (percussion).

The program opens with vocalist Stephanie Porter, who will be accompanied by Darius “Butch” Nordal, a wonderful pianist who doesn’t get out enough these days but has a long history in the area going back to the 1960s. Porter’s group is rounded out by Dan O’Brien (bass) and Steve Yusen (drums).

During intermission, guitarist Ari Joshua will entertain guests with Delvon Lamarr on organ and the wonderfully swinging drummer Lionel Kramer, who, along with his wife, Cooksie, produces Eastside Jazz Club events.

DEAR MAYOR MURRAY, Please Don’t Let an Automotive Parts Storage Lot Go Where Seattle Drum School Could Go

The City of Seattle is requiring extensive building code renovations at Seattle Drum School’s north branch (12510 15th Ave NE) which neither they, nor their landlords can afford. Unfortunately the building is being sold. An opportunity has arisen for them to purchase the former Fire Station 39 in downtown Lake City, less than a mile away from their current location. Drum School director Steve Smith says the city has other options for this fire station property, and they need supporters to let the Mayor’s office and the city council know that Seattle Drum School belongs in Lake City.

Smith said, “What we need now more than anything is the city’s cooperation and support. We think there’s a lot of enthusiasm inside the city’s Department of Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) for our attempt in acquiring the fire station. They have stressed repeatedly that getting politicians involved in the process is going to be critical to our success. The latest we’ve heard is that the city is about to lease the property to Bill Pierre for two years to use as parts storage. They’ve been trying to buy the property (they already own sixteen acres along Lake City Way), but so far the city has turned down that proposal. We’ve emailed area politicians and Lake City civic groups attempting to garner support for our endeavor. So far we have only received a notification from the Mayor’s office acknowledging our inquiry.

In terms of fundraising we will need to raise at least $300,000 in order to make the fire station our new home, as it is in need of a seismic retrofit as well as other code improvements, in addition to significant basic renovations just for it to be made inhabitable for us. We really hope we can make it work.”

In May, 2013 Smith spoke about Seattle Drum School’s situation.

The North Seattle and Georgetown locations have roughly 600 students and over 40 teachers combined. They offer bass, drum, guitar, piano, voice, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, DJ, mandolin, and ukulele lessons, as well as rock-band classes, and audio-engineering instruction. During the summer, there are camps, and they host all-ages shows and clinics as well.

Lastly, Smith said, “The city is enforcing laws and standards that are designed to improve the quality of society and the environment. I think it’s in everybody’s best interest to present this situation as an opportunity to foster cooperation and find a solution to our problem that benefits everyone involved including the City of Seattle as a whole.”

TOKYO — Around the world, the music business has shifted toward downloads and streaming. But in Japan, the compact disc is still king.

On a drizzly Sunday afternoon recently, Tower Records’ nine-level flagship store here was packed with customers like Kimiaki Koinuma. A 23-year-old engineer in a Dee Dee Ramone T-shirt, Mr. Koinuma said that, unlike most men his age around the world, he spends little time with digital services and prefers his music on disc.

“I buy around three CDs a month,” he said, showing off a haul of six new albums, including the Rolling Stones’ classic “Exile on Main St.” and an assortment of the latest Japanese pop hits.

Japan may be one of the world’s perennial early adopters of new technologies, but its continuing attachment to the CD puts it sharply at odds with the rest of the global music industry. While CD sales are falling worldwide, including in Japan, they still account for about 85 percent of sales here, compared with as little as 20 percent in some countries, like Sweden, where online streaming is dominant.
