Pettis, the four-time nominee and 2010 winner of Earshot Golden Ear Awards “Northwest Vocalist of the Year,” traveled to Kobe, Japan in 2006 to perform as a guest artist at KAVC Hall as First Place winner of the Seattle-Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist Audition.

Her debut performance at Jazz Alley will serve as a fundraiser for Japan earthquake relief. Donated covers collected will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

“I have felt a connection to the people of Japan ever since my visit to Kobe. The their warm hospitality and enthusiasm for jazz has left a lifelong impression on me and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to give back in some small way,” Pettis said.

Pettis’ performance will feature a different rhythm section each night. On Tueday, April 19, Pettis will be joined by Darin Clendenin (piano), Clipper Anderson (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums), all of which appeared on her recent OA2 release, Here In The Moment. On Wednesday, April 20, she will be joined by her rhythm section from May I Come In? – Randy Halberstadt (piano), Jeff Johnson (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums).

The International Composers Pool (ICP) Orchestra, pictured here, doesn’t just invent music in the moment, it plays with the idea of how that music gets made. The life of longtime Seattle resident and internationally known jazz photographer Ron Hudson will be celebrated with a night of music and photography at Jazz Alley on Monday, April 11. Musical guests will include the Roosevelt Jazz Band and many members of the Seattle jazz community. The program begins at 7:30pm.

From such legends as Count Basie to Woody Herman, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, and the young lions such as Stefon Harris, Joshua Redmond, Christian McBride and Regina Carter, Ron Hudson has “sat in’’ with the best of them, recording their performance images on black & white film.

Hudson’s work is featured in four major books: Monterey Jazz Festival: Forty Legendary Years (with forward by Clint Eastwood) as well as A Paradise called Pebble Beach by author Ray March, A life in the Golden Age of Jazz, A Biography of Buddy DeFranco. and most recently Take Five, the public and private lives of Paul Desmond by Doug Ramsey.

Hudson was an advocate for jazz education. If you wish to honor his memory, donations can be made to:

Pianist Lynne Arriale and her bandmates Omer Avital (bass) and Anthony Pinciotti (drums) at Jazz Alley on Wednesday, March 23, the second night of her two-night stand there,

The trio played many of the tunes from Lynne’s most recent recording, Convergence. She surprised the lucky people who were still in the club fifteen minutes after the show ended by coming back on stage for a beautiful solo take on Abdullah Ibrahim’s “Mountain of the Night.”

Tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Ballard Jazz Festival which runs April 20-23. Pre-sale tickets are discounted, with the largest discount available to those who purchase before April 1 (Friday).

This year’s festival is headlined by pianist Mitchel Forman and his quartet, featuring Chuck Loeb, Kevin Axt and Marvin “Smitty” Smith, as well as the East-West Trumpet Summit featuring trumpeters Ray Vega and Thomas Marriott.
