He is not without ego, but does not covet the title “composer” before his name. He is a classic, jazz guitar player, the likes of whom are few and becoming more rare.

“I know the business upside down, and I know what you’re supposed to do when you play for an audience,” said Pizzarelli, who, at age 83, is one of the oldest working jazz musicians around. “You got to entertain them. That’s gotten lost I think. It’s always, ‘Then I wrote this, and then I wrote this.’ You don’t hear ‘Tea For Two’ or ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,’ or ‘Stardust,’ those great standards.”

Continuing their shared dominance with Garfield High School of the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Roosevelt High just claimed the 2nd place prize at this year’s annual event. Earning several individual and collective honors, the Roosevelt High School remains one of the most distinguished and consistently impressive student ensembles. Under the direction of Waldo King and now Scott Brown, Roosevelt has toured the world, competing in numerous international jazz events and education summits. Roosevelt performs on June 7th at the Triple Door at 5:30 and 8:30pm. The earlier set features Jazz Band III and Jazz Band II, while the 8:30 set features the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Band I

CHICAGO (AP) — Koko Taylor, a sharecropper’s daughter whose regal bearing and powerful voice earned her the sobriquet “Queen of the Blues,” has died after complications from surgery. She was 80.

Taylor died Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital about two weeks after having surgery for a gastrointestinal bleed, said Marc Lipkin, director of publicity for her record label, Alligator Records, which made the announcement.

“The passion that she brought and the fire and the growl in her voice when she sang was the truth,” Blues singer and musician Ronnie Baker Brooks said Wednesday. “The music will live on, but it’s much better because of Koko. It’s a huge loss.”
