Human Spirit (Thomas Marriott – trumpet, Mark Taylor – saxophone, Orrin Evans – piano, Essiet Essiet – bass and Matt Jorgensen – drums) recording at Tula’s Jazz Club during the second night of their two-night sold-out run at the Earshot Jazz Festival.
From EyeShot Jazz (a great photo blog you should check out, especially since the Earshot Festival starts this weekend and there will be updates almost daily!)
Trio Commando made their public debut at the chapel Performance Space opening up for Eric Barber, performing improvisations, excavations and conversations through a high powered trio configuration featuring Wayne Horvitz (piano), Samantha Boshnack(trumpets), and Beth Fleenor (clarinets/voice). Unexpected and brilliant set of music with exciting electronic and vocal intermixing.
Saxophonist Eric Barber, an innovative saxophonist and composer in the world of jazz, world, and improvised music gave a solo performance last night at the Chapel Performance Space. I was entranced by the sounds he blew and recorded in his black box and then played on top of again and again and twice he played pieces with recorded human voices including his young daughter’s. Beautiful.

Trumpeter Riley Mulherkar and trombonist Andy Clausen, back home after their first year at the Juilliard School in New York, perform as a duo at Egan’s. Some standards (“the first time I’ve done that as a leader”, said Andy) and some free (“the first time Riley’s done that”) made for an interesting and unusual set. Saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo sat in for one particularly energetic piece.

Preeminent violinist Regina Carter put on a fascinatingly beautiful performance tonight as she and her band kicked off the opening performance of the 2011 Bellevue Jazz Festival at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Cente. If the rest of the Festival is half as good as Regina was tonight it will be a festival full of wonderful performances that I will not want to miss.

The ZIGGURAT QUARTET performed at the Seattle Art Museum for the Earshot Jazz Series ” Art of Jazz” series. A good turnout heard the band’s expression of “rhythmic experimentation which drives the ensemble’s complex original compositions. Many of the pieces were deeply influenced by the rhythms of East Indian music, as well as jazz and contemporary chamber music.” Here are some photographs from the performance.
