On Sunday October 10th 2010, the Eastside Jazz Club will present their Annual Jazz Extravaganza concert Number 6. This year it will be held at the Theatre in Meydenbauer The event will feature the fabulous internationally famous Jazz Vocalist Dee Daniels. Come and see & hear why they say “FANTASTIC! Dee Daniels captured the audience when she first walked on stage and never let go! Her charismatic stage personality and incredible vocal flexibility coupled with outstanding arrangements, allowed each song to have its own special essence. Thanks for a great evening. from Earshot Jazz: Often regarded as the great alto foil to Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz prefers long, warm legato lines that nonetheless touch on wilder harmonies than might first be apparent. Konitz formed a key association with Lennie Tristano in the 1940s, and with Tristano, recorded arguably the first “free” jazz of the modern era. Konitz was an integral piece of the Birth of the Cool Nonet, and later performed in Stan Kenton’s Orchestra. Konitz has released many excellent small group albums with Warne Marsh, Gerry Mulligan, and Tristano, though the 1961 trio date Motion with Elvin Jones and Sonny Dallas, is, for many, the great treasure of his small group records. Konitz’s popularity waned somewhat in the 60s, though from the 70s onward he has been an incredibly prolific recording artist, and he is now playing as strongly as ever. Performing here at the Triple Door with the young Minsarah trio, here is a chance to see the legend from a few feet away, doing what he has done for over 60 years: truly improvising.

Sol Disk is proud to present a great night of free-form jazz with the Acoustic Reign Project featuring Pacific Northwest and New York music scene veterans Michael Bisio, Jim Knodle, Michael Monhart, Brian Kent, and Jack Gold-Molina. New York trumpeter Ray Vega will be in Seattle this weekend so the East-West Trumpet Summit will take the stage at The New Orleans this Friday.

Earlier this year Vega and Thomas Marriott’s CD reached #1 on the JazzWeek National Airplay Chart and continues to have a strong presence across the country, currently holding the #14 spot for all of 2010.

Marriott’s regular Friday quartet will back up the dueling trumpets, Rick Mandyck on piano, Phil Sparks on bass and Matt Jorgensen on drums.

Next week we are celebrating Bob Hammer at the New Orleans Restaurant on Tuesday, October 5th from 7pm – 10pm. Some of you have worked with Bob, or have played from his charts. Those of you who don’t know him, and all, please read on.

The main reason we are celebrating, is because Bob Hammer is 80 years old and has made his living, solely in music for OVER 60 (sixty years). And he has many ultra-high honors to his name, including arranging for Charles Mingus who called Mr. Hammer his “…Beethoven.” It is possible and likely that all of us have heard Bob’s work through the years on main stream media. Therefore we have been influenced by his work.

I am also presenting a picture of Bob Hammer to Gaye, to hang on the wall atn the New Orleans. I feel it very important to recognize Gaye for her decades of contribution to Live Music. (She already told me today, that she will not get up on stage.) Regardless, we are honoring her as well as Bob and I urge you to come to the New Orleans next Tuesday (Oct 5) at 7pm.

It is a-la-carte, so please buy a drink or some gumbo and support the house. HoloTrad Band is playing their regular gig (don’t forget to tip the musicians!).

If you have a gig and can’t make it, email me a message to read to Bob from you if you wish. And I will gladly accomodate.

Earshot Jazz is proud to present one of the most fluent and distinctive alto saxophonists in jazz history. Lee Konitz is revered in the jazz world for establishing his own unique voice on the alto saxophone while most others were under the huge influence of Charlie Parker. His association with the Cool Jazz movement of the 1950s included participation in Miles Davis’ legendary Birth of the Cool sessions. From his work with Lennie Tristano through an entire career of creative collaborations around the world, Lee Konitz has imbued jazz progression with both dignity and fire.

The legendary Lee Konitz performs one show at the Triple Door with his vibrant new Quartet, comprised of the German pianist Florian Weber and his band mates in the trio Minsarah.
