New York City’s musicians’ union has begun leafleting outside a major jazz club, the first salvo in what union leaders say is a campaign to gain pension benefits and a minimum wage for jazz artists.

The campaign began quietly last Thursday night, when four members of Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians stood in the cold outside the Blue Note in Greenwich Village and handed out leaflets with the headline “Justice for Jazz Artists!” Musicians continued passing out information outside the Blue Note over the weekend and said they would do so again starting on Thursday.

“It’s just a sin that we have no pension,” said Keisha St. Joan, 72, a jazz vocalist who was distributing leaflets. “I will not have a pension before I die.”

Ballard is losing one of its Thai restaurants. After nearly a decade in old Ballard, Thaiku (5410 Ballard Ave. NW) is closing.

Staff was told last week that the restaurant would close on December 23rd. The bar, however, may stay open until the end of the year. Staff tell us that the landlord has raised the rent to an amount they can’t afford, so the owners have decided to close.

Ellington’s wonderful “Sacred Music” is both serious and swinging. It is a reverent and hip body of jazz composition, written late in his career, for jazz big band, vocal and instrumental soloists, gospel choir, and tap dancers.

For the past 22 years Earshot Jazz has presented an annual concert of Ellington’s Sacred Music. The concert features the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, co-directed by Michael Brockman and Clarence Acox, guest vocalists Everett Greene, Nichol Eskridge, and the NW Chamber Chorus, and special guest tap-dancer Alex Dugdale.

The Eastside Jazz Extravaganza is this Sunday, December 4, at 2:00pm at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center (11100 NE 6th Street, Bellevue).

The show features a double bill headlined by vocalist Jackie Ryan joined by Randy Halberstadt, Jeff Johnson and Gary Hobbs.

The Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto will open the concert with Ben Thomas (Vibraphone and Bandoneon), Chuck Deardorf (Bass), Mark Ivester (Drums), Jeff Busch (Percussion), plus Jovino on Piano, Flute, Melodica, and percussion.

As an added bonus there will be preconcert and Intermission Jazz in the foyer with the Jose “Juicy” Gonzales Trio with Michael Marcus on Bass, Lionel Kramer on Drums, and Jose “Juicy” on Keyboards and Vocals.

The Master of ceremonies will be Jim Wilke of Jazz After Hours, PRI, Jazz Northwest, and KPLU.

What a line up!! It’s really going to be a fabulous afternoon. Please support us, so that we can continue to provide the Eastside with sensational Jazz just for you.

Tickets are $20 ($15 students 18 & under) are available at the door or in advance through Brown Paper Tickets.
