The Saturday afternoon triple bill at Jazz Port Townsend’s McCurdy Pavilion fired on all cylinders, unusual for a three-and-a-half hour show featuring three distinctly different acts.

Up first was the Clayton Brothers band — more accurately the Clayton family band, since it featured not only festival artistic director and bassist John Clayton and his brother, alto saxophonist Jeff, but John’s fiery, dredlock-bedecked son, Gerald, who plays piano. This was essentially the same sextet that tore up the Public House in Port Townsend Friday, with the difference that John Clayton replaced Joe Sanders and that the group played a prepared set, including a world premiere.

With Terrell Stafford on trumpet, Stefon Harris on vibes and Obed Calvaire on drums, the band had firepower to spare, and they took no prisoners in a set characterized by thick textures, high pressure, sizzling cross-rhythms, soulful swing and a refreshing variety of tempos, instrumentation and solo order. On the opening tune, a rhythmically tricky original by Jeff Clayton titled “Cha Cha Charleston,” Stafford let fly a bravura circus of high notes and muscular, percussive phrases, then continued to outdo himself all afternoon. Jeff, whose girth and mustache recall Fats Waller, mugged with minty surprise at Stafford’s virtuosity, one arm akimbo, as if to say, “Get a load of that!”

Chemical Clock – Jazz: The Second Century

Following Syrinx Effect last Thursday evening was yet another band arising from Seattle’s embarrassment of avant-jazz riches, Chemical Clock,  an aggressive and determined young band with a lot of good ideas and more than enough chops to pull them off. Led by keyboardist and composer Cameron Sharif, the quartet’s self-titled debut CD EP is a brief and refreshing blast of post-everything avant fusion. Keep in mind that the word “fusion” is a bit loaded. Fusion, to Sharif and his colleagues, means something very different than it did back in the 20th century. The combination of Ray Larsen’s electric trumpet and Shari’s electric keys might suggest a set inspired by Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew (Columbia, 1969) – but while such influences are unavoidable, Chemical Clock is not about reinterpreting or regurgitating the past. Indeed, there is very little nostalgia going on here. The fusion here encompasses aspects of jazz, electronic dance music, prog-metal, contemporary classical music, and the indefinable electro-acoustic music currently being explored by edgy rock bands such as Lightning Bolt and Hella.

Seattle Times: Music of Quincy Jones at Jazz Port Townsend

Back in February, when Garfield High School Jazz Band director Clarence Acox was at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival, bassist and festival director John Clayton casually mentioned to Acox as he was walking off the bandstand that he wanted Acox to do “some kind of Quincy thing at Port Townsend.”

“I didn’t hear from him for several months,” says Acox.”Then I heard I was leading the band.”

Eventually, Acox came to understand he was heading up a program with the Centrum All-Star Big Band at this year’s Jazz Port Townsend, which gets underway Thursday, July 25. The big band concert is Saturday afternoon.

Acox has had a ball putting together the program, gathering arrangements with help from Clayton and (trombonist) Dave Marriott.

“Quincy had a knack for creating beautiful melodies,” says Acox. “But he also had a knack for putting together great arrangements that were appealing to the audience and that were substantive enough that the musicians enjoyed playing them.”

Seattle musicians play Joshua Wolff tribute in North Carolina

The first annual Pinehurst Jazz Festival took place early this week in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at the historic Pinehurst Country Club. The festival, held in memory of the late pianist Joshua Wolff, featured a line-up of musicians closely associated with Wolff. Among the headliners were saxophonist Jon Gordon, pianists Toru Dodo and Eric Verlinde, trumpeter Thomas Marriott, drummers John Bishop and Abdullah Rahman, vocalists Hillary Gardner, Whitney James and Michelle Walker as well as Artistic Director and bassist Paul Gabrielson. The musicians, drawn from the New York and Seattle jazz scenes, performed three standing room only shows in the ballroom of the famed golf resort, built in 1898.

Syrinx Effect at Jazz: The Second Century

Syrinx Effect an experimental platform for trombonist Naomi Siegel and saxophonist Kate Olson,  played contemporary, improvised music with electronics at the Chapel Performing Space in the opening performance of the Jazz The Second Century, the latest edition of Earshot’s juried series. It was a beautiful set of interesting music.  Olson mixed jazz licks and space on soprano sax above a layer of laptop effects, Buddha Machine loops, and snaps, pops and analog electronic sounds from a Cracklebox. Siegel explored the range and booms of trombone and lays down a background of looped brass thwarted by guitar pedals, plus field recordings from her travels.

The duo’s recent release Gnarly & Sweet shows their approach to improvised sonic journeys, tending to cinematic soundscapes set on droning rhythmic motifs. The two trade responsibilities in driving the shape and form of the pieces, each, at times, soloing minimally and sweetly or bombastically.
