With a luxuriant voice redolent of the red soil that sustained her as a child in Georgia, vocalist Lizz Wright sanctifies every song she sings.

While the 29-year-old Brooklyn resident first gained national attention delivering swing-era standards associated with Billie Holiday, she’s emerged in recent years as a soul-drenched singer/songwriter whose music eludes definition.

When someone asks her what kind of music she performs these days, “I just say ‘jazz country,’ and I hope they’re confused enough not to ask any more questions,” says Wright, who opens a four-night run at Jazz Alley tonight.
