Tuesday Jazz

EASTSIDE JAZZ CLUB: Janette West
from Earshot Jazz: Vocalist Janette West’s recently released CD Snapshot (Pony Boy Records) is garnering attention as a fresh and gentle yet rhythmic set of music with an exciting band, full of Latin and R&B energy. West began singing as a child after being introduced to jazz by her mother. She migrated to Seattle in the 1970s and landed in the center of a vibrant club scene. She worked with R&B organ trios for several years, opening for acts like Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner, and performed for many radio and TV jingles. She went on to work six nights a week performing up and down the West Coast with various groups, including the popular band Smoke. In the early 1990s, she fronted a big band and a smooth jazz outfit, performing at festivals and clubs. Today, Janette and drummer and husband Marty Tuttle have their own quartet, playing the American songbook with a twist. Marty brings to the table strong roots in Afro/Cuban music, which he has studied relentlessly throughout his lifetime. The Janette West Quartet performs as part of the Eastside Jazz Club programming at Sherman Clay in Bellevue. Tickets are $13 for adults; Students 18 and under, $8. from EyeShotJazz.com – photos by Daniel Sheehan:

The ZIGGURAT QUARTET performed at the Seattle Art Museum for the Earshot Jazz Series ” Art of Jazz” series. A good turnout heard the band’s expression of “rhythmic experimentation which drives the ensemble’s complex original compositions. Many of the pieces were deeply influenced by the rhythms of East Indian music, as well as jazz and contemporary chamber music.” Here are some photographs from the performance.

Roosevelt edged out at Essentially Ellington

Results are in from Essentially Ellington at Lincoln Center in New York City:

Winner: DILLARD CENTER FOR THE ARTS, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Second: ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL, Seattle, WA
Third: MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, Mountlake Terrace, WA

Huge congrats to both Roosevelt and Moutlake Terrace!

Update: Paul de Barros has a piece up on the Seattle Times website.

Some excerpts:
Roosevelt High came in second, and Darin Faul’s jazz band from Mountlake Terrace High placed third.

“I’m elated for my kids,” Brown said. “They worked hard. It didn’t come together until late, but they really ramped it up.”

*********************

There was a lot of back and forth among the judges over picking the winners. Choices were “hotly contested,” said Marsalis, as 15 bands — at least five of them top-notch — played three songs each Friday and Saturday in the sumptuous-sounding Rose Hall, at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

*********************

Neither Roosevelt nor Mountlake Terrace is a stranger to Essentially Ellington. Roosevelt has made the finals 12 times; Mountlake Terrace, five times.

Given the past success here of Garfield, many were shocked when it didn’t make the finals this year. According to Massey, Garfield inadvertently failed to renew its membership in Essentially Ellington on time, so the school’s sheet music arrived only a week before the due date for an audition CD.
