from The Seattle Times:
Three high-school jazz bands from the Seattle area have been selected as finalists for the 2012 Essentially Ellington competition in New York. For the first time, Ballard High School is in the running. The two other finalists — Roosevelt High School and Mountlake Terrace High School — are veterans of the contest. Roosevelt has won three times. Mountlake Terrace has been in the finals five times and come in third twice.
The 15 finalists were chosen from 111 applicants, who sent in recordings of three songs.
Essentially Ellington is sponsored by the nonprofit organization Jazz at Lincoln Centers. The finals take place May 4-6 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

From The Seattle Times:
Seattle guitarist Bill Frisell must be part cat, though his irrepressible curiosity hasn’t been fatal yet.
One week he’s releasing an exquisite batch of John Lennon songs (“All We Are Saying … “), the next week it’s a collaboration with a Brazilian vocalist (“Lágrimas Mexicanas”).
Frisell’s latest obsession is a lickety-split ’50s country-and-western duo — lap steel pioneer “Speedy” West and guitarist Jimmy Bryant — whose material will be featured on a concert at the Portland Jazz Festival, part of a two-day Frisell focus called “For Portland Only.”
The eclectic guitarist first heard about West and Bryant 15 years ago, through concert producer Chuck Helm at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio. When Helm suggested playing the music, Frisell’s first reaction was, “You’re crazy! It’s too fast!” But about 10 years later, when pedal steel man Greg Leisz suggested they give it a try at slower tempos, Frisell agreed. They called the project “Not So Fast!”
“That sort of got us off the hook,” said the soft-spoken jazz man. “Last spring, we did it for the first time at the Wexner. In fact, it’s the only time we’ve done it. It was just so much fun.”

from the American Federation of Musicians:
After five years and 23 short-term extensions, Congress has passed legislation reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the next four years. Included in the bill are provisions that create a uniform national policy regarding musical instruments on airplanes. Any instrument that can be safely stored in the overhead compartment or underneath the seat may be brought on board as carry-on luggage. Additionally, the bill sets standard weight and size requirements for checked instruments, and permits musicians to purchase a seat for oversized instruments, such as cellos, that are too delicate to be checked. Existing law allowed each airline to set their own policy regarding musical instruments, and size requirements varied widely for both carry-on and checked baggage. The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has been lobbying Congress to enact such a policy for nearly a decade.
“This is great news for professional musicians throughout the U.S. and Canada who carry the tools of our trade – our instruments – aboard commercial aircraft,” said AFM President Ray Hair. “Ending the confusion over musical instruments as carry-on baggage has been a top legislative priority for nearly a decade. I am proud of our Government Relations Director, Hal Ponder and his assistant Laura Brigandi in our Washington legislative office for seeing the effort through. Musicians can now fly in friendlier skies.”
The FAA reauthorization was passed by the House of Representatives on Friday, February 3 by a 248-169 vote. It subsequently passed the Senate on Monday, February 6, 75-20. The President is expected to sign the bill into law.

Bobby Broom and The Deep Blue Organ Trio
February 7-8, 2012
JAZZ ALLEY
2033 6th Avenue
Reservations: 206.441.9729
Show at 7:30pm
The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents Bobby Broom and The Deep Blue Organ Trio, for two nights, touring in support of their latest release Wonderful!. Band members are Bobby Broom (guitar), Chris Foreman (Hammond B3 Organ) and Greg Rockingham (drums). Set times Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6pm on Tuesday and 5:30pm on Wednesday.
Celebrating the classic jazz combo configuration of the Hammond B3 organ, guitar and drums, as well as the Black-American experience through music, The Deep Blue Organ Trio breathes new life into the classic jazz configuration bringing a modern edge to a musical timepiece.
Fresh from a successful year-end week of performances at the Umbria Winter Jazz Festival in Italy, Deep Blue is looking forward to playing for West Coast audiences and plans to feature material from their latest CD Wonderful!, a tribute to Stevie Wonder. Their deeply informed, strongly felt versions of nine Wonder songs from the 1970s made a big impact on jazz radio last year. The disc was the most played jazz title in North America late last summer, coming in at #1 on both the JazzWeek Top 50 Jazz Album Chart and the CMJ Jazz Top 40 Chart. Wonderful! finished at #15 on the JazzWeek Top 100 chart for 2011.
Broom, Foreman, and Rockingham — who first played together in 1992, and formed Deep Blue Organ Trio in 2000 — have emerged as prominent purveyors of the jazz organ trio tradition. Prior to Wonderful!, the band recorded two albums for Delmark (2004’s Deep Blue Bruise and 2006’s Goin’ to Town: Live at the Green Mill), and 2007’s Folk Music for Origin. For the past decade, when not on tour, they’ve held down Tuesday nights at the famed Chicago jazz club, the Green Mill.
