Tribute to Gaye Anderson on Jazz Northwest, Sunday September 9

Tribute to Gaye Anderson, friend of music and musicians, on Jazz Northwest, November 9 on 88.5 KPLU

Gaye Anderson was owner and proprietor of the New Orleans Creole Restaurant from 1985 until her death on August 29.  Widely known as a staunch supporter of live music, she presided over thousands of nights of jazz and blues performances at her Pioneer Square restaurant.  Its fame spread all over the country as visitors remarked “I wish we had something like this back home.”   The music ranged from traditional New Orleans and Chicago style jazz, through Swing, Bop and modern jazz on weeknights with blues on weekends.

On this Sunday’s Jazz Northwest, we’ll hear a variety of music recorded in performance at The New Orleans, and reminiscences by some of the musicians who’ve played there frequently over the past 27 years.   Dave Holo, Ray Skjelbred, Clarence Acox and Maia Santell describe how Gaye Anderson’s personality was behind this popular spot and how she’s been such a positive influence on the Seattle music scene.  Included are performances by The New Orleans Quintet, the Holotradband, Floyd Standifer, Clarence Acox, Ray Skjelbred, Maia Santell and Thomas Marriott.

Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 1 PM PDT on 88.5 KPLU and streams simultaneously to the internet via kplu.org.  The program is also available as a podcast following the air date.   Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke, exclusively for KPLU.

Seattle Mourns Gaye Anderson

Photo by Daniel Sheehan / Earshot Jazz

Word has started to move through the Seattle jazz community that Gaye Anderson, owner of the New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Pioneer Square for over two decades, passed away last night.

The New Orleans is one of Seattle’s longest-running jazz clubs and her loss will be felt by the many musicians and jazz fans who frequented the club.

We will post service information when it becomes available.

Check out the July 2011 profile by Earshot Jazz on Anderson and her club.

Update: The Seattle Times has posted an article:

Musicians mourn owner of Pioneer Square club

by Paul de Barros

A pillar of the Seattle music scene has fallen.

Gaye Anderson, owner and operator for 27 years of the New Orleans Creole Restaurant, in Pioneer Square, died Thursday.

Miss Anderson was 62. She went into a diabetic coma last weekend and was taken to Harborview Hospital, where she died of complications related to lung and heart disease, said her mother, Alice Coleman.

“She had a loving, loving heart; she was just so caring,” said Miss Anderson’s mother.

Apparently Seattle musicians felt the same way. In 2005, Miss Anderson was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame.

“There was no one — I repeat, no one — that was as generous and kind and loving to the musicians than Gaye Anderson,” said Garfield High School Jazz Band director Clarence Acox, who has played drums at the club for 26 years.
