Leni Stern Thursday night at The Royal Room

Thursday, September 17, 2015
Leni Stern Trio/ Ben Von Wildenhaus
8:00pm

The Royal Room
5000 Rainier Ave South
Seattle

Leni Stern is a traveler. Borders are not important, as she fits in effortlessly from place to place. The many languages of rhythm are her passports, her love of people fixes her destinations, and time marks her well-earned path. For over 25 years Stern has found motivation in the ever-changing world around her for the music that she plays, a sound that is equally transforming, malleable, fluid, and moving. Traveling. She came from Europe, put roots down in America, followed the winds to Africa, and her sights are always on the horizon.

Ben Von Wildenhaus
After 10 years spent deploying sonic barrages with saturnine heavy-riffers Federation X, tinnitus wasn’t the only voice in the back of Ben Wildenhaus’s head. “I had always listened to surf along with garage and punk and all the heavy and angular Olympia stuff,” he says. “But at the same time I was playing and listening to a lot of jazz—Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Miles, especially electric Miles, and getting weird with experimental stuff.”

Overton Berry and Bruce Phares tonight at the Royal Room

Old friends join together once again!

From 1978 until the mid ’90s, Seattle Jazz Legend Overton Berry and bassist Bruce Phares were featured headliners at countless venues and concerts in the Northwest. Their intuitive musical interaction on stage was legendary. During their time together, they were joined at the hip both musically and as friends (OB was Bruce and Donna’s best man at their wedding), performing most notably as a duet, but also in trio, quartet and larger formats, often with some of the greatest singers in northwest and international music.

Bruce left public performing in the mid ’90s for business pursuits, with the intention of returning to the stage some day.

Overton and Bruce have performed only 3 times in the last 10 years, each sold out shows and they bring their magic once again, this time to the venerated stage of The Royal Room in Columbia City, Seattle.

Bill Anschell at Tula’s this Saturday

A note from Bill Anschell:

Just a quick note to let you know my trio, featuring bassist Phil Sparks and drummer Gary Hobbs, will be playing at Tula’s this Saturday evening. Both are great musicians; Phil was my long-time bandmate at the New Orleans, and I’ve worked with Gary in Susan Pascal’s quintet and Chuck Deardorf’s trio. This is the first time all three of us will play together.

Tula’s is in the headlines right now for being in the path of a wrecking ball, part of a large Belltown complex that will be remade into residential units. If you’ve never been there, or haven’t been there lately, it’s worth an evening just to see what a great venue it’s become, thanks mainly to the efforts of General Manager Jason Moore. It will be a terrible loss to me and all the other pianists in town; it’s probably the only jazz club in the world with an owner who tunes the piano religiously. That piano also happens to be a really nice instrument in a room with good sound and looks; it has no equal among clubs dedicated to Seattle artists.

Whether you come for the music or to pay tribute to the venue, it would be great to see you there. $16 cover; music from 7:30 to around 11:00 pm. Reservations are a good idea (206-443-4221), especially if you’d like to pick your table. Visit www.tulas.com for all the details.

—Bill

Tula’s Jazz Club listed as a property sold to developers

A story in today’s (September 1) Puget Sound Business Journal lists the building occupied by Tula’s Jazz Club as one of the properties to be sold to an Atlanta developer who has plans for a 124-unit building.

The deal has not been finalized according to the article, but news of a sale is not surprising considering the building housing Mama’s Mexican Kitchen was sold earlier this year for $4.5 million. Seattle Jazz Scene spoke with Tula’s manager Jason Moore at the time of the Mama’s Mexican Kitchen sale and Moore commented that a sale of the Tula’s building in the future was not unexpected.

Seattle Jazz Scene will post updates as we hear more.
