The John Coltrane Birthday Celebration will feature Alexey Nikolaev (saxophone), Thomas Marriott (trumpet), Eric Verlinde (piano), Phil Sparks (bass) and Matt Jorgensen (drums). The group will perform Coltrane’s music from his extensive, yet relatively short career (he died at age 40).

Seattle Times: Eastside Jazz Extravaganza Preview

All rejoice … jazz coverage has returned (momentarily) to The Seattle Times. From their blog post today:

There was a time, decades ago, when every city in America boasted a ‘hot jazz society” — Seattle still has one devoted to early traditional jazz — in which aficionados gathered, usually monthly, to pore over new records or present concerts for their members.

In Bellevue, a good old-fashioned jazz society still exists. It’s called the Eastside Jazz Club and it’s run by the estimable South African swing drummer Lioniel Kramer and his wife, Cooksie, a pianist, who present monthly concerts by local musicians with an almost quaint air of devotion.

Every year, the club presents an “extravaganza” featuring local musicians. On Saturday, the ninth extravaganza features vibraphonist Susan Pascal and vocalist Stephanie Porter.

The Eastside Jazz Club presents their annual Jazz Extravaganza Saturday at 7:30 at the Bellevue Courtyard by Marriott.

Tonight: Virginia V Cruise

new8

For friends of Jazz Northwest, and Northwest Jazz:

We’re again helping the Virginia V Foundation put on a jazz cruise in the spirit of the fun-filled Seattle Jazz Society jazz cruises of the 60s & 70. One of the great hits from that era was Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island” – so we decided the live music this time around should be by Jay Thomas and The Cantaloupes, who specialize in neo-boogaloo!

This Full Moon Jazz Cruise is this Thursday, September 19, 2013. Boarding begins at 6:30 PM at South Lake Union Park, sailing is at 7 PM (late comers will not be seated!). We’ll be on Lake Union and Lake Washington for the full moon rising! “Heavy appetizers” are included and a cash bar will be available. Proceeds benefit the Virginia V Foundation which keeps this historic 91 year old vessel alive and steaming around the lakes and Puget Sound.

It’s a quintessential Seattle event. The Virginia V is the last of the fabled “Mosquito Fleet” that carried passengers around the Sound before today’s car ferry system. We hope you can pass the word along to others you know who will be interested in a great party on the water with live music. Feel free to forward this email.

Thomas Marriott unveils “Urban Folklore” this Wednesday

Thomas Marriott (trumpet) with pianist Orrin Evans at the 2011 Earshot Jazz Festival. Photo by Jim Levitt.

Trumpeter Thomas Marriott unveils his first extended work for quartet with the Orrin Evans Trio on Wednesday, September 18 piece, entitled “Urban Folklore,” tells the stories of modern-day life that many of us share and live on a daily basis. Joining the seven-time Golden Ear Award-winning trumpeter are pianist and frequent collaborator Orrin Evans, Eric Revis (the longstanding bass player with the Branford Marsalis Quartet) and drummer Donald Edwards. The following day, Marriott and company will head into the studio to record.

“This is something I have been working on for nearly five years, off and on” says Marriott. “Many times the things that tie us together are the frustrations, fears, hopes and joys we all have in common. We tell each other our personal stories so that we don’t feel alone in our sadness, or so we might share our happiness. ‘Urban Folklore’ is a musical collection of these stories and feelings that unite us as a modern society.”

Opening for the quartet will be the Bull-Horns Sextet comprised mainly of students from Roosevelt High School. The band, led by trumpeters John Otten and Noah Halpern, features Luke Woodle on drums, pianist Gus Carnes, saxophonist Jory Tindal, and Will Langlie-Miletic on bass.

Tickets for the show are $15.00 in advance, $20.00 at the door and are available online at strangertickets.com. The Royal Room is located at 5000 Rainier Avenue South in Seattle. Music starts at 8:00 PM and is an all-ages venue with full-bar and kitchen.
