from Earshot Magazine: Performing in a wide variety of musical styles, including rhythm and blues, straight-ahead jazz, and pop, Bernie Jacobs presents his longstanding quartet of Eric Verlinde (piano), Chuck Kistler (bass), and Andre Thomas (percussion). A self-taught musician, Jacobs has sung since childhood and established himself a master of the jazz flute, an instrument he took up over 40 years ago. Jacobs has more recently added the tenor and alto saxophones to his arsenal. In addition to leading his own quartet and the Smooth Groove ensemble, Jacobs has over the years performed with such Seattle luminaries as Buddy Catlett, Floyd Standifer, Woody Woodhouse, Phil Sparks, Brian Nova, Clarence Acox, and Larry Fuller. Presented as part of the Art of Jazz series, Bernie Jacobs will perform at the Seattle Art Museum on July 9 at 5:30PM. The performance is free with museum admission.

For many years, trumpet player and composer Chad McCullough has been an indispensable member of the small team at Origin Records, helping artists manage their projects, taking photographs and doing a lot of the grunt work in the office. Now with the release of his first CD, “Dark Wood, Dark Water,” McCullough is officially an Origin artist as well.

The album features his dream-team sextet performing nine songs, seven of them McCullough’s own compositions. “There’s no way I would have gotten all these guys to play with me if I hadn’t been pulling favors for them for the last three years,” said McCullough, 27, who grew up in Seattle listening to many of his sidemen play.

“Dark Wood, Dark Water” also features Mark Taylor and Geof Bradfield on saxophones, Bill Anschell on piano, Jeff Johnson on bass and John Bishop on drums. McCullough says the album is a humble effort that spotlights the group as much as him.”I didn’t want it to be a typical first album where you try to show everyone you can play really fast and really high.”

The Chad McCullough Group plays a CD-release party at 7:30 tonight at Tula’s Jazz Club, 2214 Second Ave., Seattle; $10 (206-443-4221 or www.tulas.com).

Kim Rushing grew up in Harrisburg PA, playing piano, clarinet, and participating in
chorus, choir and plays. Graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Moved to NYC and toured U.S., Canada, Europe and Brazil with Jon Hendricks (Lambert, Hendricks and Ross), including gigs at the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note in Manhattan. Cyrus Chestnut, Larry Gales and Michael Carvin were in the backing trio for the Hendricks and Co. vocal group. After NY, I’ve lived and sung in California, Hawaii and Atlanta. Including house vocalist gigs for the Ritz Carlton Hotels in Kona, Atlanta Downtown and Buckhead.

Drummer and spouse, Robert Rushing has played with Marian McPartland, Bill Anschell, Jessica Williams, Dave Kikoski and Art Matthews among others.

Darrin Clendenin (piano) and Jon Hamar (bass) round out the quartet.

When the first episode of Icons Among Us debuted on the Documentary Channel in April, most reviewers quickly contrasted it with the last major jazz documentary: Ken Burns’s Jazz. That film infamously slighted the music’s modern age, cramming the last forty years of jazz history into its final one-hour episode. (In contrast, Burns dedicated a full two hours to the five years from 1935 through 1939.) Icons Among Us came across as a corrective, a proudly contemporary chronicle that dedicated its entire running time to championing today’s musicians and today’s scene. It’s not that Icons ignores history, but it treats past as prologue, opting for Art Kane’s wide lens on the present.

Although it’s based in Seattle, JazzWeek magazine’s “jazz label of the year” has Eugene’s fingerprints all over it.

Origin Records bested Concord Records, Palmetto, Sunnyside, Heads Up and HighNote Records to take the prize in late June. The winner was announced at the JazzWeek Conference held during the Rochester Jazz Festival.

The label’s founder, drummer John Bishop, accepted the award. Bishop, a 1978 South Eugene High School graduate, got most of his formal music education here, but moved to Seattle in 1981.

Reached by phone at home, he said he did not set out to start a record label. But now that he’s making a nice living at it, he said being recognized as one of the best in the country is a big honor for his business, which was nominated once before.

The origin of Origin Records goes back 12 years, when Bishop started the label to release his own album, “Now … Here …This.”

Today, Origin puts out 40 titles a year under its own name, as well as through its spinoff label, OA2 Records, and a sister imprint that focuses on classical music. A news release says the label has six Grammy nominations to its credit.

Microsoft, RealNetworks and Yahoo were sued by music labels that allege the companies made recordings available without getting permission.

The labels seek $150,000 for each copyright infringement and want the songs removed from the companies’ digital music stores, according to the 108-page complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Tennessee.

Songs by Aretha Franklin, the Carpenters, Grand Funk Railroad and Emmylou Harris are among those listed in the complaint. The labels allege Yahoo Music Service, RealNetworks’ Rhapsody and Microsoft’s Zune Music Service didn’t get authorization to sell music through the stores.

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents ‘2009 Jazz Label of the Year’ Origin Recording Artists “Scenes” celebrating their recent release Along the Way. The Northwest trio of guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop were first heard together on the 2001 release Scenes along with tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck. Now returning as a trio under the name “Scenes”, they continue their exploration of free flowing yet highly melodic ensemble playing as they perform an all original set of music on their latest release, Along the Way.

Drawing on Stowell’s longtime association with bassist David Friesen and Johnson & Bishop’s involvement in the very fertile Seattle creative music scene that has included Julian Priester, Jessica Williams, Gary Peacock, Larry Coryell & so many more, the trio sculpts an elegant, intelligent, uncompromising yet very accessible jazz sound.

From Earshot Jazz: the new Marine View Church Jazz Series promises to bring some wonderful music to Tacoma. Held in the sanctuary, which features a terrific Puget Sound view, the Tacoma venue features jazz performances at 5pm the last Sunday of each month. In June, the Susan Pascal quartet strikes a fine balance between spontaneity and imaginative arrangements, original music and the great American songbook. Future months will feature HipBone, Jovino Santos Neto, and Gail Pettis, to name a few, so keep your eyes open.
