This special edition of Jazz Northwest features highlights from the past six months of programs, and some concert recordings not previously aired. Included are excerpts from two concerts
celebrating Seattle jazz legends Ernestine Anderson and Hadley Caliman, The Susan Pascal Quartet’s salute to the Modern Jazz Quartet, The Jim Knapp Orchestra in a festival performance and a preview of next week’s broadcast of the music of Monk and Mingus by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.

This program is part of the Spring Fund Drive at KPLU, and Northwest Jazz fans and musicians are encouraged to support the only radio program devoted exclusively to regional jazz performers and

An 81-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder for trying to shoot the wife of jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri near the elevator at their New York condominium, prosecutors said.

Maria Cartagena pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and assault Wednesday and was being held on $25,000 bail.

Iraida Palmieri, 73, was inside an elevator at her Forest Hills condo when it stopped at the fourth floor Tuesday evening and the doors opened to reveal Cartagena in the lobby, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

“Move over or I’m going to kill you,” Cartagena told Palmieri, then drew a revolver from the fanny pack clasped around her waist and fired one shot, according to a criminal complaint.

Mike LeDonne is performing at Tula’s Jazz Club tonight before heading up to Vancouver to perform at The Cellar. The New York-based organist will be joined by Portland guitarist Dan Balmer, Cory Weeds on saxophone and Matt Jorgensen on drums.

LeDonne has been a long-time regular on the jazz scene and has backed up artists such as Benny Golson, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Charles McPherson, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, Clifford Jordan and more.

The Ballard Jazz Festival’s Mainstage Concert this year features a double-bill of two jazz living legends.

Trumpeter Claudio Roditi (called “one of the very best performers in jazz” by All Music Guide) brings his samba and jazz blend to the stage, with the help of Brazilian-born, Seattle-based pianist Jovino Santos-Neto and his trio featuring Chuck Deardorf on bass and Mark Ivester on drums. Roditi has shared the stage with Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, and Joe Henderson, and has delighted audiences around the globe.

Also on the bill will be the dynamic Hadley Caliman Quintet, playing music from their latest release Straight Ahead, which has been in the Top 10 on the National Radio Airplay charts since its release last month. Caliman, arguably the most iconic Seattle jazz musician alive, has recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz and pop, including Freddie Hubbard, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Dexter Gordon and many others. His band includes Northwest luminaries Thomas Marriott, Matt Jorgensen, Eric Verlinde, and Phil Sparks.

The Jim Knapp Orchestra will no longer be performing on a regular basis. We have been going 18 years and that seems to be the lifespan for this group as a regular performing organization. I am eternally grateful for the musicians of such great talent who have made up the band including several who have been in the group since its inception.

And thanks to you – listeners, friends and fellow musicians. It has been a particular pleasure to make this music available to high school and jr. high students from the truly excellent music programs in the Seattle area.

The Andrew Oliver Kora Band combines elements of jazz and traditional West African music to create a unique soul-stirring sound.

In the wake of his 2007 tour of West Africa with the U.S. State Department’s Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad, pianist and composer Andrew Oliver was inspired to dive deeper into the relationship between jazz and West African music. His exploration led to the founding of the Kora Band, featuring atypical instrumentation that highlights Kane Mathis on the 21-string Kora, a traditional harp from West Africa.

Mathis is one of the most accomplished Kora players in the U.S., having spent many years in The Gambia studying with master musicians. Also featured are Chad McCullough on trumpet, Brady Millard-Kish on bass, and Mark DiFlorio on drums. The talented ensemble performs both original compositions designed to explore the many possibilities of its unique timbre as well as traditional and modern songs from West Africa arranged specifically for the band.

The BlueStreet Jazz Voices are featured in an Art of Jazz concert at the Seattle Art Museum on KPLU’s Jazz Northwest on Sunday, March 21 at 1 PM PDT. The jazz choir is a community-based group of singers under the direction of Ken Wilson accompanied by a jazz trio and featuring guest Susan Pascal on vibes in this concert. The community-based group has been presenting a series of concerts billed as “Under the Influence” – the influences being great jazz singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, The Hi-Los and others. The Art of Jazz Series is presented on the second Thursday of each month by Earshot Jazz and the Seattle Art Museum with the support of The Seattle Weekly and KPLU. The next concert in the series will feature the instrumental duo of Brent Jensen and Bill Anschell on April 8 at 5:30 pm.
