KBCS 91.3FM and the Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley present Pearl Django with special guest Andreas Öberg to ring in the first week of 2008! Band members include Neil Andersson, and Ryan Hoffman (guitars), Rick Leppanen (bass) Michael Gray (violin), David Lange (accordion) and very special guest Andreas Öberg (guitar). Set times on Tuesday – Thursday are at 7:30pm. Set times on Friday at 7:30 and 9:30 and Sunday at 7:30pm. Both sets on Saturday are sold out.

Born in Stockholm, by the age of 18 Andreas Öberg made a name for himself on the vibrant Swedish scene performing with many of Swedens top jazz artists while also attending the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm. He has performed with a wide array of artists including Les Paul, Larry Coreyll, Barbara Hendricks, John Pisano, Frank Vignola, Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, Dorado Schmitt and Angelo Debarre just to name a few. A versatile guitarist, Andreas Öberg plays mainstream jazz, modern jazz and gypsy swing. Most recently Öberg was the winner of the Audience Prize at the Gibson International Guitar Competition in Montreux 2006.

The music pioneered by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his partner in swing, violinist Stephane Grappelli, is still utter bliss in the esteemed hands of Pearl Django, now celebrating their fourteenth year of performing and recording. With a continuously fresh and entrancing sound, bands like Pearl Django rejuvenate a love and talent for “Gypsy swing,” a style that was once the height of sophistication. With urbanity, romance, and a sense of urgency, the music of Pearl Django reaches out to the sophisticates of a new millennium as something joyful and timeless. Gypsy jazz and “hot club” music has been enjoying a major resurgence across the United States and Pearl Django continues to be one of the busiest proponents of that style. Pearl Django’s followers include Reinhardt and Grappelli fans, guitarists and guitar enthusiasts who relish nimble and intricate picking, world music fans drawn to French and Gypsy accents, plus jazz buffs and aficionados of the swing scene.

By inviting Andreas Öberg to join them this year, Pearl Django is continuing their January tradition of having the best of Gypsy and mainstream jazz artists to begin the year. Prior guest artists have included Howard Alden, Robin Nolan, Frank Vignola, Patrick Saussois and Ken Peplowski.

Join Jake and the band for an intimate and enjoyable evening of holiday tunes and some selections from his new CD “Holding Back the Dawn”.

Jake Bergevin joins the ranks of many successful hyphenates as a singer-trumpet player. Like Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Jr. or he has continued to refine his craft in both arenas.

His first CD, “My Name is Jake”, available at CDBaby.com, is a combination of sensitive jazz vocals and romping party/dance music. Conceived as a tribute to his heroes Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, Jake puts his own stamp on some classic tunes and demonstrates his crooning, blues shouting, scat-singing and trumpet solo skills in fine fashion.

Jake has played performances at many of Seattle’s most prestigious venues and events, including the Showbox Theatre, The Triple Door, Paramount Theatre, Bumbershoot, Folklife Festival, ten years running at the Ellensburg Jazz in the Valley Festival.

On his first visit to Bake’s Place, he plans to perform new material from his forthcoming CD “Holding Back the Dawn”; a mix of mostly bossas and ballads. Music will include new treatments of jazz standards such as “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face”, “No Moon At All”, “How Insensative” as well as music of Sting, Pat Metheny and some original compositions and new lyrics.

Seattle meets L.A.

Trumpeter Thomas Marriott, and Drummers John Bishop and Matt Jorgensen have the perfect way to beat the N.W. winter weather…

Go to Los Angeles.

Tonight the guys will perform at the first ever “L.A. Origin Records Jazz Party.” Hosted by 425 Productions, the event will feature several artists from the record label in a jam session-style hang. Grammy-nominated artists Chris Walden and Kim Richmond will be joined by tenor saxophonists David Sills, Rob Lockart and Matt Otto, with Seattle native Gary Fukishima on piano as well as several other guests.

After the recent success with the Ballard Jazz Walk, and a 10th Anniversary pin, the Origin boys haven’t even thought about taking a break. “When we get back to Seattle, it’ll be time to get to work on our trip to Toronto for the IAJE in early January…” says Bishop, “and then another Ballard Jazz Festival.” The coming Ballard Jazz Festival (the 4-day event) is scheduled to run April 23-26.

Since most of this site’s readers live in Seattle, you’ll want to tune in Friday morning (through the web) for an on-air interview with Matt, Tom, and John. Visit 88.1 KKJZ for more info.

The L.A. Jazz Party is a project of former Origin Intern Jeff Watkins, a music business student at the University of Southern California. The event will be held at the Pasadena Jazz Institute, at 8pm. Tickets are available at the door.
