Nels Cline and Julian Lage, at the Royal Room Jan. 13

from The Seattle Times:

Two of the most creative guitarists in jazz, from two generations, team up for an open-ended romp at the Royal Room on Tuesday: Veteran Nels Cline, 58, a polymath familiar to broad audiences from his work with Wilco, Thurston Moore and Scott Amendola; and Julian Lage, the 27-year-old phenom introduced a few years back by vibist Gary Burton. The pair recently released the aptly titled “Room,” a string of free-ish improvisations that leave lots of space between the lines, including the conspiratorial “Whispers From Eve,” reverb-laden “Freesia/The Bond” and sitar-inspired “Calder.” Though the album overall feels a bit precious and abstract, odds are these guys will be more lively on stage than in the studio. Besides, my colleagues in the monthly Down Beat magazine feature, The Hot Box, all disagreed with me. Album ratings aside, I’ll definitely be checking these guys out live, and so should you.

7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Royal Room, Seattle; $20.

NY Times: Song and Daughter Inspire Plans to Celebrate People With Disabilities

For those in Seattle who know pianist Mike LeDonne, check out today’s article in the New York Times.

In July, a month after the Gay Pride March is scheduled to unfold, a different kind of pride procession is set to commence: the Disability Pride NYC parade.

The impetus behind the inaugural march, which organizers call the first of its kind in New York City, might seem unlikely: the jazz pianist Mike LeDonne.

Mr. LeDonne, a fixture on the city’s jazz scene for decades, said he has been working for several years to create an annual Disability Pride Day and parade to shine a spotlight on people with mental and physical disabilities.

“Actually, she’s the reason for the parade,” said Mr. LeDonne, 58, pointing to his daughter, Mary, 10, inside their apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. She was on the floor, cradling a musical toy, and repeatedly pressing its buttons to hear a variety of tinny melodies.

Mary was born with Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder that has left her developmentally disabled and without speech. She is legally blind and often uses a wheelchair.
