Kendrick Scott at Bellevue Jazz Festival

from The Seattle Times:

Kendrick Scott (pictured), one of the hottest young drummers in jazz, headlines the Bellevue Jazz Festival next week with his group Oracle, which features probing ex-Seattle pianist Aaron Parks. Scott, a man with a message who deals deftly with politics and spirituality — on his recent album, “Conviction,” he does Sufjan Stevens’ “Too Much” and Herbie Hancock’s “I Have a Dream” — is joined by saxophonist John Ellis, guitarist Matt Stevens and bassist Joe Sanders. Appropriately, Seattle bassist Evan Flory-Barnes, who also soaks his music in meaning, opens the show. The festival features pianist Cyrus Chestnut with vibraphonist Stefon Harris, as well as more than 40 acts at various venues in the Bellevue downtown core and runs from Wednesday through June 2. Oracle performs at 7:30 p.m. May 31 at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center, 11100 N.E. Sixth St., Bellevue; $12-$24 (425-453-1223 or www.bellevuejazz.com).

NY Times: Wayne Horvitz and Royal Room Collective at the Stone

from The New York Times:

The keyboardist and composer Wayne Horvitz lived and worked in New York City for most of the ’80s, when combining jazz with other kinds of popular or experimental languages, American or otherwise seemed exciting and almost imperative. There was a lot of the shock-of-the-new going on back then, and a lot of deference and homage to the history of the early ’60s New York avant-garde.

But Mr. Horvitz stood apart. He had an evened-out, coherent composing voice that contained bebop and rock, gospel hymns and country, free jazz and funk and midcentury film music and Charles Ives. There was very little posturing or provocation or wackiness in it. It didn’t feel like a stretch.

He moved to Seattle in 1988 with his wife, the composer Robin Holcomb: our loss. But he’s done valuable work there, alone and collectively. About a year and a half ago Mr. Horvitz, now 57, became a partner in a music space and bar called the Royal Room, in Columbia City, in Seattle. He books it, more or less. (He was the first booker at the Knitting Factory in New York in 1986.) And he plays there with his own group, the Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble, twice a month.

The group plays his compositions and he reorders them, sometimes radically, using some of the hand signals developed to conduct improvisers by his old New York friend Butch Morris, who died this year. Mr. Morris called the process conduction. On Tuesday at the Stone, where Mr. Horvitz started a six-night run of his 13-piece band — its first New York performances — the music sounded like a formal acknowledgment of Mr. Morris’s method and a demonstration of Mr. Horvitz’s freedoms within it.

Pianist Josh Wolff passes away from cancer at age 39

JoshWolffPianist Josh Wolff, who has resided in New York City for many years while maintaining close ties to his hometown of Seattle, passed away on Sunday from pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by many friends and his family.

From a Facebook post by his brother David:

It was about 6:20. Although Joshua Wolff was no longer speaking, he signaled for us all to gather around – younger brother Dan and me, our parents, and more than a dozen of his closest friends. We all knew that he was ready for liftoff. After several minutes of adieus, my mom, holding him, said, “Josh, don’t worry about us, you can fly away now. Just fly away.

Then his eyes widened for a moment, and he flew, just like that.

God’s speed, my dear dear brother

Roosevelt places Third at Essentially Ellington

from The Seattle Times:

Roosevelt High School has won third place in the prestigious national Essentially Ellington jazz-band competition in New York City.

First place went to The Tucson Jazz Institute from Tucson, Ariz.; second place went to the Jazz House Kids in Montclair, N.J.

Three Seattle-area high-school jazz bands — Garfield and Roosevelt, in Seattle, and Edmonds-Woodway, in Edmonds — were chosen as finalists for the 2013 Essentially Ellington competition.

Since 1999, when the competition opened to bands west of the Mississippi, Seattle-area bands have often dominated, taking first place seven times (Garfield four, Roosevelt three) and sending at least two — and a couple of times, four — finalists to New York. However, 2013 marked the first time Garfield had made the finals since 2010, when it took first place for the fourth time. Edmonds-Woodway has made the finals four times.
