Saxophonist Bert Wilson, dies at 73

from The New Tribune:

Bert Wilson, an Olympia resident and famed saxophonist, died Thursday night of a heart attack at Providence St. Peter Hospital. He was 73.

Wilson was known for multiphonic sax playing, getting as many as four notes at once from his instrument, which was designed for one note at a time, said his wife, Nancy Curtis.

He played as recently as Tuesday, she said, before the heart attack.

Stricken with polio when he was 4, Wilson spent much of his life in a wheelchair. He was mostly paralyzed, Curtis said, but had some movement left in his shoulders, arms, neck and head, “which was perfect for playing wind instruments.”

Wilson was born in Evansville, Ind., on Oct. 15, 1939. His grandfather was a vaudeville performer, and before too long, the young Wilson was joining him on stage. Polio changed all that.

Many of Wilson’s growing-up years were spent in a hospital school in Chicago. But that was where he got turned on to jazz, hearing Charlie Parker, his wife said. By age 12 he was playing the clarinet, and he learned the saxophone a year later. Playing the keyboard was another of his specialties.

After graduation, Wilson and his mother moved to Los Angeles and he established himself in the scene there. He moved to New York in 1965.

Life was hard for a musician in a wheelchair before the days of accessible buildings. “The only places he could afford were ground floor apartments where people would break in and steal everything,” Curtis said.

He left New York for Berkeley, Calif., in the early 1970s, only to find himself back in New York by the end of the decade. Wilson taught Lenny Pickett, who went on to become the leader of the Saturday Night Live Band.

Friends coaxed him to Olympia in 1979, Curtis said, and he’s been here ever since. She met Wilson in 1980, and the two musicians became fast friends.

“He was feisty and opinionated,” she said, with a saxophone “to back up his opinions and opinions to back up his opinions also.

“He really loved to play … as hard as he could and make beautiful music and pretty much did every time.”

Curtis said that funeral arrangements are pending. “I know that what Bert would want would be some music, and I want it to be his because he wrote a lot of beautiful contributions.”

Avant-garde jazz legend Roscoe Mitchell to perform classic work

Tonight at 8pm at Benaroya Hall.
200 University Street, Seattle.
Tickets will be available at door.

from The Seattle Times:

Saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, 72, is a legend in the world of avant-garde jazz, having held down one of the two reed chairs in the Art Ensemble of Chicago for more than three decades. A rationally severe formalist with an unadorned sound on alto saxophone that plunges straight to the gut, Mitchell is also known for dizzyingly transcendent spins into interstellar space on soprano sax. His concert in Seattle celebrates his piece “Nonaah,” which began as a melodic line in a 1973 AEC album, was eventually headlined on Mitchell’s brilliant, groundbreaking 1977 album of the same name and has continued to undergo transformations.

This performance features Mitchell in a world premiere of a new arrangement of “Nonaah” for the group Lawson, part of the Seattle new music collective Table & Chairs. The group Bad Luck also presents a new work based on the melodic themes of “Nonaah.” Other arrangements of the piece will be presented, as well.

8 p.m. Friday at Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle; $20-$30 (www.tableandchairsmusic.com). Preconcert talk and Q&A at 7:15 p.m.

THE ROYAL ROOM: Music for the Baroness
Featuring Dawn Clement, Ryan Burns, Josh Rawlings, Wayne Horvitz and Tim Kennedy.

The Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter was an iconoclast and created a one of a kind narrative in the history of jazz. Born into the Rothschild dynasty in 1913, the Baroness (known to the jazz world simply as Nica) left her husband (a high level French diplomat) and alienated much of her family along with their vast resources to move to New York City shortly after a life changing listening of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”.  She became a great supporter of Jazz musicians and is remembered by many for taxiing musicians around in her Rolls Royce and hosting late night jam sessions (much to her neighbors chagrin). However, publically she is probably best known for the death of Charlie Parker in her 5th avenue apartment in 1955, made infamous by the NYC press.

Two-guitar trio in Ballard, and an anniversary in Pioneer Square

Jazz Northwest visits two gigs this week. First is a two-guitar trio with John Stowell and Dave Peterson on guitars and Bruce Phares on bass playing at Skarbos during the Ballard Jazz Walk last April. The trio of long-time friends plays a set of standards in very comfortable surroundings with an attentive audience.

Former Seattle resident pianist Billy Wallace was back in town recently to help Clarence Acox and the Floyd Standifer Legacy Band celebrate 27 years of weekly performances at The New Orleans Creole Restaurant. Billy was a regular in the band for many years, but more recently has been active in Las Vegas and Denver. He joins Phil Sparks and Clarence Acox for a couple of tunes at the New Orleans in the final part of this week’s show.

Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU. The program is also available as a podcast at kplu.org following the broadcast.

Seattle Memorial for Jazz Pianist Joshua Wolff

JoshWolffSunday, June 2, 2013 at 3:00 pm

Cornish College of the Arts
Poncho Concert Hall (located in Kerry Hall)
710 East Roy Street
Seattle, WA 98102

There will be remembrances of Joshua’s life, and the effect he had on the lives of others. Please help us celebrate his life and also enjoy the music by some of Joshua’s dear friends. There has already been a wonderful memorial in New York City, and in late July in North Carolina, there will be the first edition (of what will become the annual) Joshua Wolff Memorial Jazz Festival. The purpose of that festival will be to raise money to help teach music to children in public schools – a very fitting tribute to Josh.
