Three bassists leading their groups and an outstanding young alto saxophonist originally from Portland on Jazz Northwest

It’s not often the bass player steps from the back of the band to front his own group but there are notable exceptions…. Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, and Ron Carter among others come to mind.  There are three with strong Seattle connections on Jazz Northwest this Sunday: Chuck Deardorf, the late Chuck Metcalf and Clipper Anderson.

We’ll also hear an outstanding young alto saxophonist from Portland, Hailey Niswanger who recently graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston. She’s playing two gigs in the area next week.  The program includes info about best bets for live jazz in the area next week and samples some of them.

Jazz Northwest airs every Sunday afternoon at 1 on KPLU and features music by outstanding regional jazz artists and visitors from CDs and location recordings.  The program is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and is also streamed live and available as a podcast at kplu.org.

Leading Questions: Jon Hamar

Photo and interview by Steve Korn

Someone once told me “don’t worry about why you are or are not hired.  Worry about the gigs you have.”  He was a very wise man!

When I was 14 I found out that my middle school teacher had played in the Stan Kenton Band.  I had always respected him, but his professional experience gave me a little more appreciation for his expertise.   This teacher was extremely supportive and encouraging and had a part in my decision to pursue music.

The bass is both simplistic and complicated.  The function of the bass is simple, but making it work is difficult.   I’m trying to play in time, in tune and make good note choices when improvising … this is not simple!

Practice makes me enjoy music making even more.  The more time I am able to spend in practice the better I feel and am able to communicate on gigs.  I can concentrate less on the technical aspect of playing and get inside the music.

When I look at where I’m at right now, I am thankful for all of the amazing opportunities and the people in my life.  The unfortunate part of experience is the realization of how much more there is to learn.

The piece(s) of music that always resonates with me is J.S. Bach’s cello suites.  There is so much great music to hear and enjoy, so this is a very hard question for me to answer.  I appreciate Bach because he was a true genius and improviser.

Some of my best ideas come to me when I’m most relaxed.  It’s difficult for me to loosen up and forget about work, bills, etc.  I find that when I can really rest, I come up with some nice ideas.

My parents were not professional musicians but I grew up listening to my father play Boogie Woogie and stride piano.  I remember being glued to my Dad’s left hand when he was playing, and I was intrigued by the movement in the music.

Fear is often thought of as a motivating factor … I recently decided that I don’t want to make any decisions based on fear.

As I get older, I’ve realized that life does not revolve around music.  I love music.  It’s my passion, but there are more important things.

Music has taught me to be patient, focused, expectant and hopeful.

Change is inevitable.  I expect to see change in every aspect of life, including music.

The thing that makes me nervous on stage is indecision.

I’m happy whenever I’m listening to my Son laugh!

A sense of humor is important on so many levels.  Musicians know all the crazy things that happen on gigs.  A healthy sense of humor is a survival tool.  I’ve found it is important that I am able to laugh at myself … there are many opportunities.

Playing jazz in Seattle is great!  There are so many talented, hardworking and creative people in the Northwest.  I count it a privilege to work with them.

Photos: Andy Clausen’s (Re)Birth of the Cool

By Daniel Sheehan, EyeShotJazz.com

New York-based composer and trombonist Andy Clausen joined former tongue-in-cheek cross-town rival Riley Mulherkar (now classmates at Juilliard) to present the complete Birth of the Cool suite with a Seattle nonet, including French hornist Tom Varner and alto saxophonist Mark Taylor last week at the Chapel Performance Space presented by Earshot Jazz.

To bring a faithful rendition of the classic 1949-1950 recordings, Clausen and trumpeter Mulherkar have compiled parts from various sources and transcribed and edited scores for the complete Birth of the Cool suite. Clausen “I find this music compelling enough to merit serious investigation … I have personally dedicated dozens of hours to copying out every part from the scores and preparing the music to be as accurate as possible. This music needs to be heard.”

KPLU Jazz Cruise

88.5 KPLU “NPR News and All That Jazz” presents its 20th annual Jazz Brunch Cruise on August 12 with a performance by KPLU favorites and masters of Gypsy swing, Pearl Django, aboard Argosy Cruises’ Royal Argosy.  The cruise will be hosted by KPLU’s Dick Stein.

Entering their 18th year of performing, Pearl Django continues to be one of America’s most respected and busiest Hot Club style groups. Though still strongly influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt, Pearl Django’s repertoire now includes many original compositions. Their music reaches out across the divides of taste to a wide variety of audiences. The band’s fervent followers include Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli fans, guitar enthusiasts (and guitarists!), lovers of string music, including bluegrass devotees, who relish nimble, clean, intricate picking, “world music” fans drawn to French and Gypsy accents, plus jazz buffs and aficionados of the new swing music. Transcending simple categorization, Pearl Django packs in enthusiastic audiences at dancehalls and nightclubs, at folk music festivals and jazz festivals alike.  Their 11th album, Eleven, was released in May 2012.

Pearl Django is Michael Gray, violin; Troy Chapman and Ryan Hoffman, Rick Leppanen, bass; and David Lange, accordion.

The Royal Argosy departs from Seattle’s Pier 56 at 10:30 a.m. and returns at 1 p.m.  More information and tickets will be available June 27 at www.kplu.org and at 1-800-677-5758 during business hours.  Tickets are $62.00 and on sale now.
