Saxophonist Andrew Swanson wrote a piece in today’s Seattle Times about the continuation of Cafe Racer.

The artistic community at Cafe Racer is a rare and fine gemstone; an object of endless beauty and complexity.

The cafe is a constellation of characters — glassy-eyed university students, scooter enthusiasts, curious out-of-towners, salty ultra-regulars, friendly neighbors and other hyphenated demographics. I relocated to the neighborhood just to be near it. It’s Roosevelt’s living room.

Last Wednesday, a disturbed man named Ian Stawicki entered that living room and mercilessly executed our friends where they sat and stood.

This brutality could be reason for us Seattleites to live in fear. But if we trembled now at every turn, forgetting why the victims were there in the first place, we would be doing a tremendous injustice to the five killed on that terrible day.

They, and all of us, were drawn to Cafe Racer for the openness of its environment and the character of its constituents. Amid its collection of terrible paintings and billows of bacon-scented air, I’ve found some of the finest human treasure Seattle has to offer. It was there that I met an affable sword swallower named Drew Keriakedes, better known as circus performer and musician Shmootzi The Clod.

I ask this of everyone: Please, do not waver in the face of this tragedy. Don’t waste a moment thinking that it could have been you on that bar stool. Cafe Racer will reopen.

Develop your talents, be they coding or calligraphy, and proceed with conviction and compassion. You are alive, and you should act accordingly.

Take to heart one of Drew’s most inspiring lyrics: Follow your dreams, and don’t be discouraged.

Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto played at Bake’s Place during the Bellevue Jazz Festival. I caught Jovino and his group on Friday June 1st. It was my first time shooting at Bake’s and the red light is kind of overwhelming but the band sounds great. Managed to tame it a bit here for these images and here are some of my favorites from their performance.

Pianist Eddie Creed passed on April 19 at the age of 77, and he’ll be remembered on the next edition of Jazz Northwest (6/10) with a performance recorded by Jim Wilke in 1971 at The Jazz Gallery.   Eddie was one of the most active jazz pianists from the 60s through the 80s in Seattle.  There will be a memorial concert at The New Orleans on Sunday June 10 from 4 to 8 pm .

Tonight’s Cafe Racer Session was raw, powerful, catharsis. Free, outside, jamming in the alley outside Cafe Racer, My guess is that over 200 people joined the 20+ musicians who contributed to this night.

As pointed out at the start of the night, The Racer Sessions were instigated over two years ago by Drew. The first song, a building swarm of emotion and release was dedicated to all impacted by the horrifying events last Wednesday.

The Bellevue Jazz Festival got under way Wednesday, but two of the hottest headliners are still on deck. Booker T. Jones, the Hammond B-3 giant whose funky “Green Onions” was a hit in 1962, plays Friday. Jones has been on the comeback trail with a jazz-inflected album released last year, “The Road From Memphis.”

Flute master Hubert Laws, whose work in jazz, jazz-rock fusion and classical music made him a major star in the ’60s and ’70s, plays Saturday.

Leslie Lloyd, president of Bellevue’s Downtown Business Association, said Wednesday that the Jones concert was nearly sold out. As for the other headliners: “Seattle’s a last-minute town … it’s almost the last minute!”

Only a handful of jazz musicians play flute well, since most are saxophonists who “double” on the instrument. Laws is an exception. His sound has a big, silvery casing and a penetrating ring. Classically trained at Juilliard, Laws played as a young man with jazz leaders such as Mongo Santamaria and Benny Golson and was soon signed to Atlantic. Albums such as “The Laws of Jazz” and “Flute By-Laws” hit the sweet spot with fans and his later efforts for CTI, such as “At Carnegie Hall,” made him a star with a broad public.
