Seattle Times: Seattle’s Earshot Jazz Festival looks beyond tradition

from The Seattle Times:

The 2009 Earshot Jazz Festival, one of the nation’s most eclectic and protracted festivals of its kind, begins and ends its three-week run with reminders of what qualifies Seattle as a great jazz city.

Assiduously engineered by Earshot director John Gilbreath, the event, which is more of concentrated series than a festival, aims to challenge and educate as much as entertain. It brings in musicians American audiences (let alone Seattle audiences) seldom get to see — somewhat unfamiliar names who are doing much of the work of innovating and redefining of jazz.

Earshot features more than 50 concerts and also makes generous use of local talent. It opens Friday night at the Triple Door with the Garfield High School Jazz Band, which won this year’s prestigious Essentially Ellington competition in New York. Performing with the band will be Puerto Rican saxophonist Miguel Zenon, a recent winner of a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, better known as the “genius grant.”

Listen or Lose It, People: What music lovers will miss on KBCS

from the new issue of CityArts Magazine:

On August 24, KBCS-FM rolled out its new weekday program grid, replacing Drive Time Jazz with the syndicated public affairs show The Takeaway and eliminating its morning jazz programs (The Bud and Don Show, Bebop Spoken Here, Twentieth-Century Jazz and Vintage Jazz) in favor of airing Friday morning’s hybrid of jazz and world music, The Caravan, five days a week.

According to station manager Steve Ramsey, The Caravan was selected because of host John Gilbreath’s range of musical interests and ability to weave diverse musical threads through the show. “He can play music we air on Saturday nights and make it fit, then point people to the other spots on our schedule where they can hear these other styles of music in more depth,” Ramsey explains.

Gilbreath claims no involvement in strategies involving the show’s artistic direction. “I assume they have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish and it’s my pleasure to help them craft my part of what that looks like for the future,” he says.

It will not be so easy for Richard Gillmann, Iaan Hughes, and Sean Donovan, three of the five hosts of the cancelled Lunch with Folks, who have been retained for the replacement program, The Outskirts. “They will be working more collaboratively than before,” Ramsey says. “If a cool artist is heard on a Monday, you may well hear them again on a Wednesday or a Friday, because the hosts will be sharing playlists. We want the listener to get a similar audio experience no matter which day of the week they tune in. The music director will help sculpt a more consistent sound for that show with a view to being a bit more rootsy and contemporary, while continuing to keep it a folk-based program.”

These changes were implemented without soliciting input from the listeners. Eric Hardee, a volunteer host who has been with the station for eighteen years, says that when Ramsey was asked by the staff why listeners were not consulted, he answered that there was no need to ask them since he already knew what they were going to say.

Jazz at Seattle Weekly Reverb Festival

Saturday, October 3
Volterra Restaurant

festival website

5:00 p.m. ~ WMS Jazz Quartet and String Ensemble
Every year, Seattle Weekly donates five percent of the proceeds from REVERB to a music-related nonprofit. This year, it’s Friends of Washington Music, which helps fund the music program at South Seattle’s Washington Middle School. Tonight’s performance will showcase just a few of those music students; you can find more information at their booth, should you be inspired to donate. SARA BRICKNER

6:00 p.m. ~ Greta Matassa
Easily Seattle’s favorite female jazz vocalist, Matassa is rooted in the tradition of Ella, Sarah, and all the giants of swing and balladry. She delivers standards and lesser-known charts with a pure tone, a knowing heart, and unaffected elegance. If you want to hear what love songs can be like when distilled to the essence of a lost age, come hear Matassa. MARK D. FEFER

7:00 p.m. ~ Matt Jorgensen + 451
One of the city’s most reliably exciting jazz quintets, this band explores the outer reaches of the electro-acoustic landscape with dual saxes, the deft Ryan Burns on Fender Rhodes, and bass anchor man Phil Sparks. Drummer and leader Matt Jorgensen creatively powers the unit. MARK D. FEFER

8:00 p.m. ~ Leif Totusek and Freestyle Candela
In spite of Seattle’s large East African community, live afropop bands tend to be hard to find even when you’re looking for them. Leif Totusek and Freestyle Candela are a needle in Seattle’s indie-rock haystack. Totusek, who’s been in the band for 15 years, plays an African guitar style called soukous that originated in the 1950s in Zaire (currently the Democratic Republic of the Congo)—a shimmery, arpeggiated guitar sound similar to the one Vampire Weekend used on its critically acclaimed 2008 album. Totusek, however, has gone further than lifting a few soukous riffs and adding them to pop songs. In a past interview, he described traveling to London to study soukous from expat African masters; and in his own songs, he’s gone so far as to write lyrics in English and have them translated into the Congolese language Lingala. At live shows, his playing seems to flow in all directions simultaneously: rising and falling, melting from one chord to the next, like miniature fireworks displays constantly exploding with color.
