Seven musicians, each a leader in his own right, teamed up for the finale at the 2015 Jazz Port Townsend festival presented by Centrum in McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden. Two trumpets, Terell Stafford and Sean Jones; two saxophonists, Bob Mintzer and Dayna Stephens, and a great rhythm section with Benny Green, piano, John Clayton, bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums shared their enthusiasm for playing together with the crowd. The concert was recorded for radio and highlights will air on Sunday, February 14 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU, streaming at kplu.org.

The musicians were all members of the jazz faculty at the Centrum’s Jazz Workshop which precedes the festival on the last weekend of July each year. The music by Bob Mintzer, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Burrell and Thelonious Monk stretched out to include rich solos by each member of the group.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU, and airs and streams at kplu.org on Sundays at 2 pm Pacific. Thanks to John Clayton, Gregg Miller and staff at Centrum and special thanks to Rick Chinn and Neville Pearsal for their help in recording at Jazz Port Townsend. An archive of previous Jazz Northwest programs is available for streaming after broadcast at jazznw.org. Next week (2/21), Industrial Revelation in an Art of Jazz Concert at The Seattle Art Museum.

Note: Terell Stafford will be featured with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra on February 18, 20, 21 in Edmonds, Seattle and Kirkland. srjo.org
