Ed Reed at JazzScapes House Concert Series – Jan 18

Vocalist Ed Reed will perform in Seattle at the JazzScapes House Concert Series on Friday, January 18, at 7:30pm, accompanied by Portland pianist Randy Porter.

For more information, email email hidden; JavaScript is required.

Ed Reed made his recording debut just before his 78th birthday in 2007 with the widely acclaimed “Ed Reed Sings Love Stories”. Six years later (2013) his 4th CD, “I’m A Shy Guy” is a tribute to the 1940s music of the Nat “King” Cole Trio and was released to high critical acclaim, including a 4-star DownBeat review and selection as a DownBeat Editor’s Pick.

Ed was born on February 2, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio. At age 11, Reed learned how to sing to chord changes from his neighbor’s younger brother, then-teenage bassist Charles Mingus. At 17, he dropped out of school, ran away from home, and joined the army. He sold marijuana to supplement his meager military income and started to use heroin. After a general discharge, Ed started singing but his addiction to drugs quickly undermined his singing career. Ed spent more than a decade of his life behind bars for crimes related to heroin addiction, yet those years weren’t entirely wasted (pun intended), as he had the opportunity to rub shoulders—and even perform—with such jazz greats as Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon, Frank Morgan, and Frank Butler. Ed has been clean and sober for the past 27 years and is a health educator working with addicts, alcoholics, and their families.

In just a few short years, Ed Reed’s music has been critically acclaimed, reviewed in numerous print and online jazz publications (including Downbeat, Jazziz, and JazzTimes to name a few), He was a guest on Marian McPartland’s icionic “Piano Jazz” radio show on NPR stations in 2008, was profiled in the Wall Street Journal in June 2009, and placed in the Male Vocalist Rising Star category of the Downbeat Critic’s Poll in 5 out of the last 6 years.

Greg Sinibaldi’s new LP, “Ascendant”

via Greg Sinibaldi:

Greg-Record

I’m happy to announce the release of my newest record, Ascendant, on the Prefecture Music label.

Ascendant was recorded in the Dan Harpole Cistern with my good friend, clarinetist Jesse Canterbury. The Cistern is a unique space; a two-million gallon cylindrical concrete tank, originally constructed as an emergency water supply for fire control at Fort Warden in Port Townsend, WA. It has a 45 second reverb, which makes the acoustic qualities of this record truly unique. The album features compositions by myself and Jesse as well as a few improvisations, for two bass clarinets, saxophone and clarinet. It sounds awesome!

Additionally, you can get this record on an actual record! Vinyl baby! For only $12.50 you can buy a limited edition vinyl copy of the album. When you buy, you’ll also get a high resolution digital download of the music too, for all your iPod/computer/phone needs.

Don’t have a turntable? No problem, you can download the record in a number of digital formats, for whatever you want to pay for it!

Head to http://prefecturemusic.org/ for more information and links to get the record! I hope you enjoy it!

Cyrille Aimée and Diego Figuereido Duo concert at Jazz Port Townsend on Jazz Northwest

Vocalist Cyrille Aimee, with guitarist Diego Figueiredo, perform on Saturday night at the 2013 Centrum Jazz Port Townsend Festival.

A French singer and a Brazilian guitarist teamed up for a charming duo on the final night of Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend 2013. Both Cyrille Aimée and Diego Figueiredo have busy solo careers but they find time to tour together since they first met at the Montreux Jazz Contest. They perform some Brazilian tunes and some French chansons, plus American standards . The combination of virtuosity and creative interplay won many new fans for the duo during their appearance at last Summer’s festival in Port Townsend.

The complete concert will be broadcast on Sunday, January 5 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU, concluding the series of broadcasts recorded last July at Jazz Port Townsend. The concert will also be streamed live at kplu.org, and will also be available as a podcast following the broadcast.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU. The program airs Sundays at 2 PM Pacific.
