More than 700 performing arts executives, artists and managers from the Western Arts Alliance (WAA) will meet in Seattle, August 29 – September 2, to see, buy and sell touring performances for stages across the West. The regional performing arts association convenes at the Sheraton Seattle for its annual conference that includes an exhibit hall, professional development seminars, showcase performances, forums, and guest speakers.

Nearly 80 artists produce “showcase” performances especially for conference delegates. Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley dates are a rare opportunity to catch up-and-coming talent here in Seattle for the Arts Alliance conference. Jazz Alley is also a host venue for WAA’s Performance West Program, a festival within the conference that features a selection of top-tier artists.

This Sunday on Jazz Northwest

All Star Jam from Jazz Port Townsend on KPLU’s Jazz Northwest, Sunday, August 28 at 1 PM PDT

One of the features of Centrum’s annual Jazz Port Townsend is three nights of informal performances in small pubs and restaurants near the waterfront. These “Jazz In The Clubs” performances follow main stage concerts in McCurdy Pavilion and offer listeners and musicians a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying the informal interplay between world-renown musicians. One of these sessions is the focus on the next Jazz Northwest on 88.5 KPLU on Sunday, August 28 at 1 PM PDT.

This performance took place at The Upstage and brought together a bi-coastal group including saxophonists Gary Smulyan and Joel Frahm and drummer Alvester Garnett from the East Coast, and Bruce Forman, guitar, Tamir Hendelman, piano and Doug Miller, bass, from the West Coast. All were members of the faculty of the week-long Jazz Workshop which precedes the Festival on the last weekend of July. Each of the six musicians has numerous recording and touring credits and brings a wide variety of experience to this set which ranges from tender ballads to be-bop burners.

With no rehearsal beyond talking through the tunes and deciding on solo order during the gig, this is a great example of the magic spontaneity of jazz as the six musicians turn in a performance that sounds like they’ve been playing together for years. The audience surrounds the musicians on three sides and two levels, and no one is more than a few steps from the musicians making it a very participatory experience.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and kplu.org. The program is streamed live to an international audience and is available as podcast at kplu.org following the airdate.

TRIPLE DOOR: Mainstage: Sean Hutchinson’s Still Life; Lounge: Lee Redfield Quartet
216 Union Street, Seattle, 206-838-4333, 7:30pm
from Earshot: Multifaceted drummer Sean Hutchinson returns to Seattle for a hometown show on the Triple Door Mainstage (216 Union St.) on August 24. The show is in support of his debut jazz trio CD, Sean Hutchinson’s Still Life. Hutchinson is a product of the heralded Roosevelt High School jazz program; he is one in a long line of prodigious young musicians to make the coastal swing to the Big Apple. Making his home now in the fertile Brooklyn music scene, Hutchinson splits his time between leading his own innovative projects; touring with an array of jazz, indie and pop artists; and producing. Only 26, Hutchinson has launched an impressively diverse career, crossing over musical worlds to perform with jazz artists such as Maria Schneider, Dave Douglas, Shelly Berg, and Alan Pasqua to rock veterans Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers, George Porter of the Meters, Michael Shrieve of Santana, Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads and Greg Ginn of Black Flag. He also tours and records with contemporary pop outfits Francis and the Lights, Shenandoah and the Night, and 2AM Club. Hutchinson brings his New York trio to the Triple Door. The band features two of New York’s most revered musicians, both equally adept in the worlds of jazz and pop: Erik Deutsch on piano and Chris Tarry on electric bass. The 7:30pm show is all-ages; there is a $15 cover charge; www.tripledoor.com or 206-838-4333 for reservations.

Sean Hutchinson Still Life at the Triple Door – Aug 24

Drummer Sean Hutchinson returns to Seattle with his new project Still Life for a performance at The Triple Door on Wednesday, August 24 at 7:30pm.

Hutchinson, who many know from packing the Triple Door with the group The Here and Now with fellow Seattlites-who-are-now-on-the-East-Coast Tatum Greenblat and Ben Roseth, is fronting the band which also includes Erik Deutsch on piano and Chris Tarry on bass.

Blending acoustic instruments with an electronic ambience, Still Life create a sonic world where machine-like drum beats, melodic bass-lines, and lush piano textures set the stage for singable melodies and moving improvisational displays. SL is equally influenced by the giants of rock such as the Beatles and Wilco as by the great jazz trio units of Brad Mehldau, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, with the emotional intensity and electronic edge of Radiohead.
