Matt Jorgensen: Painting With Sound

from All About Jazz:

Matt Jorgensen is a very busy man. A drummer and composer, he plays and records with a wide variety of musicians, including his own long-running quartet 451 and popular trumpeter and label-mate Thomas Marriott. Jorgensen also co-manages the Origin Records label, a thriving concern that has released over 300 discs since 1997, and that now encompasses two associated labels, OA2 and Origin Classical.

He is also a family man, and it’s a family connection that provided the spark for his impressive and well-received new Origin record, Tattooed By Passion: Music Inspired By The Paintings of Dale Chisman (2010). The well-known Denver artist Dale Chisman, who passed away in 2008, was Jorgensen’s father-in-law, and his paintings and views on art and the artist have been a strong inspiration to the composer.

Most of the original tunes on the new album, which reached the top 30 on the Jazz Week radio chart, are inspired by and titled after particular paintings of Chisman, which are reproduced on the cover and in the booklet of the CD. The music generated by Jorgensen and band mates Marriott, saxophonist Mark Taylor, guitarist Corey Christiansen and bassist Dave Captein, is, by turns, driving, groove-heavy, expressive, and, especially on the three tracks with string accompaniment, poignant with the sense of both loss and hope.

All About Jazz: To start with, let me say that I am enjoying Tattooed By Passion immensely. I think it’s one of the more impressive new records I’ve heard in a long time.

Matt Jorgensen:
Thanks. I recently got back from Denver where we had the opening of the Dale Chisman In Retrospect show.

Awards Ceremony
Sunday, March 20, 2011

The Golden Ear Awards recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the previous year in Seattle jazz. In the process, Seattle jazz fans and performers take stock of and show gratitude for the region’s rich, vibrant jazz ecology.

This annual gathering features performances by the Chuck Deardorf Quintet. Warren Rand (alto sax), Dawn Clement (piano), Dave Peterson (guitar), Gary Hobbs (drums), and Deardorf (bass) comprise the quintet.

Deardorf is a regular performer in the Seattle area; a full-time professor of bass at the Cornish College of the Arts, where he’s also served as music faculty chair; and a member of Centrum’s 2011 Jazz Port Townsend faculty.

His quintet warms up the Tula’s stage at 7pm, ahead of the presentation of awards at 8pm, followed by more music at 9:30pm. The emcee for the event is the celebrated jazz radio programmer Jim Wilke, who assures a genial, informed, and well-paced evening.

Admission: $15 general, $13 Earshot members and senior citizens, $7 working musicians and students. Call Tula’s Nightclub and Restaurant at (206) 443-4221 for reservations.

Photos: Eco Quintet at Egan’s

We were going through a bunch of photos from Jim Levitt and found these which never got published.

This was the “Eco Quintet,” led by Julian Garvue on the piano. He’s nominally a junior at Garfield, but aside from music he’s full time at Bellevue College. Xavier Del Castillo from Roosevelt HS on sax; Evan Woodle (drums) and Carmen Rothwell (bass) are in the UW jazz program; Corey Dansereau on trumpet is a former Roosevelt kid now at Columbia University. They were joined for the last tune by Lucas Winter on guitar.

Jazz Drummer Joe Morello, Of ‘Take Five’ Fame, Dies At 82

via NPR:

Drummer Joe Morello, the longtime drummer with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, has died.

Raised in Springfield, Mass. with impaired vision from birth, Morello eventually found his way to New York City, where he played with many leading jazz musicians. In the 1950s, he was a regular member of pianist and NPR host Marian McPartland’s band. In 1990, that band, known as the Hickory House Trio after the venue of their employment, reconvened to tape a special reunion episode of Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz.

However, Morello is best known for his tenure with Brubeck, who employed him for over 12 years during the height of Brubeck’s fame. Famously, the smash hit “Take Five” was arranged as a solo feature for Morello.

New Seattle label Table and Chairs launch concert Saturday

Chemical Clock – Undercurrent (Dec 2010) from Table & Chairs on Vimeo.

from The Seattle Times:

A new Seattle label, Table and Chairs, launches Saturday with a concert at the Q Café, in Interbay. The label features experimental jazz, but not exclusively. It is associated with students of University of Washington music professor Cuong Vu. The same circle of musicians are involved with the Improvised Music Project (IMP), which presents monthly concerts and a festival, and Café Racer, which features Sunday night shows in the University District. “I think of IMP as the little brother to Racer, which then feeds into TnC,” said Vu, in an e-mail. “It’s one fluid path that starts at the UW, then to Racer where then more of the non-UW public is now joining.” The launch concert features Friendly Creature, guitarist Kristian Garrard, Small Face, Chemical Clock and saxophonist Neil Welch.

The show is at 8 p.m. Saturday, Q Café, 3223 15th Ave. W., Seattle; $10 (206-352-2525 or http://www.qcafe.org).

Spokane jazz world to honor the late Arnie Carruthers

from KREM:

SPOKANE — A giant in the Spokane jazz scene is dead. Arnie Carruthers died Monday at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness.

Many considered Carruthers as the godfather of jazz who influenced many of the major players in the Spokane music scene.

A car accident left him immobile. A stroke took away the use of one of his hands. But that didn’t stop him. Many said Carruthers was a character and a musician’s musician who played off and on in the lobby of the Davenport Hotel in the 1970s and 1980s. He invented new chords and his talent gained some attention across the country.

“These artists would come in. Major artists off the road and they’d hear Arnie playing. They’d say this guy is great and they’d look and realize he was doing this with one hand. He’d figure out a way to re-do it,” said Spokane Falls Community College Music Director David Wakely.

A tribute to Arnie has been in the works for several years. It is scheduled for next weekend. Apparently Arnie knew about the tribute. He was excited about it and had even gone back to the piano to practice in hopes of being able to play. But he succumbed to his illness before that happened.

The show will go on March 19 at Spokane Falls Community College in building 15 at 7:00 p.m. Many alumni who have played with Arnie over the years will perform along with Arnie’s children.
