Honored once before in 2007, Origin Records is again among 6 labels up for Jazz Label of the Year at the 7th annual JazzWeek Awards in Rochester, NY.
JazzWeek, the definitive national jazz radio airplay chart, is also a forum for hundreds in the jazz industry from radio, press, record labels, distributors, along with artists. Nominees and winners are voted upon by radio stations, disc jockeys, program syndicators, and satellite and cable broadcasters who supply airplay data to JazzWeek, and by record labels and promoters who subscribe to JazzWeek’s data services.
Also nominated in the label catagory were Concord, Palmetto, Heads Up, HighNote, and Sunnyside Records.

The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is honored to participate with First Lady Michelle Obama in the launching of the White House Music Series. The program will shine a national spotlight on music education, highlighting the important role music plays in the creativity and innovation that make this country great. Talented music students from six cities across the nation who receive free jazz instruction through the Institute will visit the White House on June 15. They will participate in “Jazz Studio” educational workshops that celebrate this uniquely American art form. The students will learn from and interact with some of the world’s most renowned jazz musicians, including Branford, Ellis, and Wynton Marsalis. Following the White House event, the students will attend a Duke Ellington Jazz Festival concert at the Kennedy Center honoring Ellis Marsalis.
“The powerful force known as jazz is recognized in all corners of our planet as America’s indigenous music and the voice of democracy,” said Herbie Hancock, Chairman of the Institute. “The very spirit of our young people is uplifted by our music and arts education community, whose tireless support has ensured that the heart and soul of our nation will flourish.”
The White House has brought together a number of organizations to participate and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is proud to collaborate with the following: Duke Ellington Jazz Festival; Duke Ellington School of the Arts; Jazz at Lincoln Center; Levine School of Music; New Orleans Center for Creative Arts; Sitar Arts Center; WPAS Capital Jazz Project.

He is not without ego, but does not covet the title “composer” before his name. He is a classic, jazz guitar player, the likes of whom are few and becoming more rare.
“I know the business upside down, and I know what you’re supposed to do when you play for an audience,” said Pizzarelli, who, at age 83, is one of the oldest working jazz musicians around. “You got to entertain them. That’s gotten lost I think. It’s always, ‘Then I wrote this, and then I wrote this.’ You don’t hear ‘Tea For Two’ or ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,’ or ‘Stardust,’ those great standards.”

Continuing their shared dominance with Garfield High School of the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Roosevelt High just claimed the 2nd place prize at this year’s annual event. Earning several individual and collective honors, the Roosevelt High School remains one of the most distinguished and consistently impressive student ensembles. Under the direction of Waldo King and now Scott Brown, Roosevelt has toured the world, competing in numerous international jazz events and education summits. CHICAGO (AP) — Koko Taylor, a sharecropper’s daughter whose regal bearing and powerful voice earned her the sobriquet “Queen of the Blues,” has died after complications from surgery. She was 80.
Taylor died Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital about two weeks after having surgery for a gastrointestinal bleed, said Marc Lipkin, director of publicity for her record label, Alligator Records, which made the announcement.
“The passion that she brought and the fire and the growl in her voice when she sang was the truth,” Blues singer and musician Ronnie Baker Brooks said Wednesday. “The music will live on, but it’s much better because of Koko. It’s a huge loss.”
